Text (English translation)Writ of terminari to William Walworth to transfer the files of his commission to deal with the rebels in London, against Thomas Faryngdon to the king's bench [dated 24 March 1382]. Indictments taken before William Walworth, mayor of the city of London, held at the Guildhall, 10 July 1381 ... The jurors of the Cripplegate Ward Without, namely John Leghton, John Northawe, John Donne, Robert Davy, Henry Henley, William Whetele, William Larke, William Norton, John Rede, John Markes, John Lancastre and Robert Thoresby present that Thomas Farndon together with a great company of malefactors who recently made insurgency against the king, on Friday, 14 June 1381, came riding on a horse and armed to the parish of St Giles Cripplegate and threatened to destroy the house of Gilbert Prynce, painter, in the aforesaid parish. But the said jurors say that the same Thomas did not do any damage, nor did he withdraw (from suit) and that he is in the custody of the constable of the Tower... The jurors of the view of Clerkenwellstreet in the county of Middlesex [presentments made 19 July 1381] namely William Stowe, William Berham, Roger Broun, John Phelipp, William Corbrigg, William Bordell, John Thomesyn, John Keys, William Amory, Henry Wright, tailor, Richard Cook and Stephen Maynard present that Thomas Faryndon of London on Thursday of Corpus Christi [13 June 1381], together with a great multitude of evildoers making insurrections against the king, was feloniously and treasonously present, helping and consenting in the burning and destruction of the manor of John, duke of Lancaster, called 'Le Savoye', and also (he was present, helping and consenting) at the breaking and throwing down of the houses of 'Le Temple', and also on the aforesaid Thursday he rod from the Temple with a with a great company of malefactors, so continuing the treasons and felonies, up to the church of St John of Jerusalem in England, called Clerkenwell in the county of Middlesex, and there he was present and ordered feloniously and treasonously to burn and throw down all the houses of the aforesaid (priory) of St John. And likewise, they say that the same Thomas was the principal cause of the death of brother Roberti Hales, prior of St John, and that he did not withdraw (from suit) etc. And also, before Robert Tresilian and his associated justices ... (an indictment) is presented that Thomas Farendon of London on Monday after Trinity [10 June 1381] he was a leader of a certain company at Cressing Temple [Essex] and there in treasonously and feloniously threw down the houses of the priory of St John Jerusalem in England and took and carried away goods and chattels found there. Also, they present that the said Thomas was at 'Le Tourhill' (Towerhill) on Friday after Corpus Christi [14 June 1381] and there he spoke to the king to be permitted to legally enter a tenement in London which Richard Weston had seized from him and said that if the king did not wish to recognize his legal title to that same tenement, then he would take possession of it on his own authority. They also present that the said Thomas on Corpus Christi [13 June 1381] was at 'Le Savoye' with the aforesaid company to burn down the houses there and at Clerkenwell and Highbury to to the burning there. The king had ordered those indictments to come before him to decide the case ... When Thomas is brought from the Marshalsea prison to the king's bench and is asked how he pleads he produces a pardon, dated 8 March 1382. For this reason, Thomas asks to be released from the king's prison etc. ... The court accepts the pardon and asks for mainpernors to guarantee the future good behaviour of Thomas against the king and his people. And on this come Henry Vannere, Walter Sybyle, Henry Herbury and Thomas Stoke, all from London, and mainpern for the aforesaid Thomas Faryngdon ... it is therefore agreed that that the aforesaid Thomas can go without day etc.
General InformationAlthough Faringdon was set free in March 1382, the accusations resurfaced in Parliament in Oct 1382 again, and he was excluded from the amnesty, basically revoking his earlier pardon [PROME, Parliament of October 1382, item 16].
