Text (English translation) | Surrey. The lord king mandated the sheriff of Surrey by his letters close in these words: Richard by the grace of God etc greets the sheriff of Surrey. Order to receive Stephen Hull' of London Draper, whom the king is sending, being imprisoned in the prison of the king's household for burning the manor of the Savoy of John king of Castile and Leon duke of Lancaster for which he is indicted, and to imprison him in Guildford castle, so as to have him before the king in the octaves of Michaelmas to stand to right touching matters that shall then be laid before him. By K, 19 August 1381 (Sheen) [see Cal. Close, 1381-5, p. 7]. As per the tenor of this letter Stephen was brought before the King's Bench and he was committed to the Marshalsea in the custody of Robert Bracy. Afterwards, that is to say after the quindene of Hilary year 9 [a die sancti Hillar' in xv dies anno nono] before the King's Bench at Westminster Stephen came in custody of the Marshalsea and sought release from the king's prison by the king's statute of pardon and the king's letter not to molest Stephen against the form of the statute, in these words: [paraphrased] cites statute giving pardon to all except named principal insurgents, etc. Letter witnessed by K. at Westmin 28 Jan. year 9 [1386]. His name not found so he goes without day. |
