Text (English translation) | Surrey. John Parker of Harrietsham was attached to answer John Auncelle of Southwark, cordwainer, on a plea that he, together with John Curteys of Leeds, John Greneford of Langley, John Charletone, Adam Charletone, John Masone of Leeds and Stephen Sym of Chart Sutton, with force and arms, broke the house of the said John Auncelle at Southwark and assaulted the said John Auncelle there, and beat, wounded and ill-treated him, and took and carried away his goods and chattels found there to the value of £20, and inflicted other enormities on him, to the grave damage of the said John Auncelle, and against the King's peace etc. And whence the same John Auncelle complains in person that the aforesaid John Parker, together with etc, on Thursday 13 June 1381, with force and arms, namely swords, bows and arrows, broke the house of the same John Auncelle at Southwark and assaulted the said John Auncelle there, and beat, wounded and ill-treated him, and took and carried away his goods and chattels found there, namely linen and woollen cloth, bronze and brass vessels, bread, ale, fresh and salted meat, leggings, soles and leather suitable for footwear, to the value etc and other enormities etc to the grave damage etc and against the King's peace etc. Whence he says that he suffered damages to the value of £20. And thereof he produces suit. And the aforesaid John Parker appeared, together with etc, through William Emery, his attorney, and says that he is not guilty of the aforesaid trespass and places himself on the country. And the aforesaid John Auncelle likewise. Therefore, the sheriff is ordered to summon twelve jurors for the quindene of Hilary 1385. The same day is given to the aforesaid John Curteys, John Greneford and the others here etc. And presently the parties come and the sheriff did not send the writ. Therefore, just as before, the sheriff is ordered to summon twelve jurors for the octave of the Purification of the Blessed Mary 1385. The same day is given to the aforesaid John Curteys, John Greneford and the others here, through their attorney, etc. At which day, the sheriff reports that the writ arrived too late etc. Therefore, as frequently, the sheriff is ordered to summon twelve jurors for three weeks after Easter 1385. The same day is given to the aforesaid John Curteys, John Greneford and the others here, through their attorney, etc. |
