| Text (English translation) | Hertfordshire. Edward Cook of Berkhamsted and Henry Cook of Berkhamsted in mercy for multiple defaults. The same Edward and Henry, John Park, John de Bury, William atte Hulle, Robert Chaloner, Henry Alstone, William Alstone and Adam Bolom were attached to answer Robert del Chambre of Saint Albans on a plea that they, together with Roger Turnour of Saint Albans, John Wymond, John Britiere, John atte Ree, Peter Fullere, John Parkere, John, son of Robert Tylere, Robert Hunte, carpenter, John Longe, carpenter, John Rede of Reed, William Calkow, Henry Clerk of Codicote, John Laurence of King's Walden, Stephen Trewebody, William Trushare, Geoffrey Hunte, junior, Robert Hunte, John Ramrigge, William Astrelle of Hemel Hempstead, John Pays, John Newchakere, Henry Parchymyner of Berkhamsted, Robert Holme, Robert Juere, Robert Chaloner, William Bank, John Masone, innkeeper, Geoffrey Richardseruant, locksmith, John Piers, John Astone, John Freberne of Sandon, John Dernewelle junior, William atte Chapelle, William Haddele, Geoffrey Roke, Hugo Fullere of Watford, John Ramrogge and Robert Stranlee, with force and arms, broke the close and houses of the said Robert del Chambre at the town of Saint Albans, and took and carried away his goods and chattels found there to the value of 40m, and inflicted other enormities on him, to the grave damage of the said Robert del Chambre, and against the King's peace etc. And whence the same Robert complains through John More, his attorney, that the aforesaid Edward Cook, Henry Cook, John Parker, John de Bury, William atte Hulle, Robert Chaloner, Henry Astone, William Astone and Adam Bolom, together with etc on Saturday 15 June 1381, with force and arms, namely swords, bows and arrows, broke the close and houses of the said Robert del Chambre at the town of Saint Albans, and took and carried away his goods and chattels found there, namely wheat, barley, malt, beans, peas and oats, linen and woollen cloth, bronze and wooden vessels and other necessaries of the home, to the value etc, and inflicted other enormities on him to the grave damage etc. And against the peace etc. Whence he says that he suffered damages to the value of £60. And thereof he produces suit etc. And the aforesaid Edward Cook, Henry Cook, John Parker, John de Bury, William atte Hulle, Robert Chaloner, Henry Alston, William Alstone and Adam Bolom appear through Richard Carltone, their attorney, and say that they are not guilty of the aforesaid trespass and place themselves himself on the country. And the aforesaid Robert del Chambre likewise. Therefore, the sheriff is ordered to summon twelve jurors. |
