Text (English translation) | Cambridgeshire. Richard Martin was attached to answer William Wykemere on a plea that with force and arms he broke the close and houses of the said William at Cambridge, and he took and carried away his goods and chattels found there to the value of £40, and also charters, writings and other muniments of his, and he inflicted other enormities on him, to the grave damage of the said William and against the King's peace. And whence the same William complains through Robert Essexe, his attorney, that the aforesaid Richard, on Sunday 16 June 1381, with force and arms, namely swords, bows and arrows, broke the close and houses of the said William at Cambridge, and he took and carried away his goods and chattels found there, namely linen and woollen cloth, bronze and brass vessels, pieces of silver, silver spoons, mazers, gold and silver necklaces, furs, bed-clothes, linen sheets, basins, lavers, and other necessaries of the home, to the value etc, and also charters, namely one charter by which a certain Thomas Payn enfeoffed John Andrew of one messuage with pertinences in the aforesaid town of Cambridge, and one other charter by which Robert Beybon of Cambridge and John Marchalle enfeoffed the aforesaid William of one messuage with pertinences in the aforesaid town of Cambridge, one writing obligatory by which John Porter of Ditton was bound to the aforesaid William in £40, and also a certain other writing by which John Smythe, a porter, was bound to the aforesaid William in 40m, and other muniments of his, namely court rolls etc, and other enormities etc, to the grave damage etc, and against the King's peace etc, whence he says that he suffered damages to the value of £40. And thereof he produces suit. And the aforesaid Richard appeared through Thomas Ellesworthe, his attorney, and says that he is not guilty of the aforesaid trespass and places himself on the country. And the aforesaid William likewise. Therefore, the sheriff is ordered to summon twelve jurors here at the octave of Hilary 1383. And the sheriff reports that the writ arrived too late etc. Therefore, as before, the sheriff is ordered to summon twelve jurors for three weeks after Easter 1383. |
