Text (English translation) | Hertfordshire. Richard Lokyer, Robert Marsshalle of Barnet, Thomas Cristomasse and Thomas Carter were attached to answer Richard Scryveyner of Saint Albans on a plea that they, together with John Welles, Walter of the Bakhouse, John Barker, dyer, John Hardy and John Sabinghe, skinner, junior, with force and arms, broke the close and houses of the aforesaid Richard Scryveyner at the town of Saint Albans, and took and carried away his goods and chattels found there to the value of 40m, and inflicted other enormities on him, to the grave damage of the said Richard Scryveyner and against the King's peace. And whence the same Richard Scryveyner complains in person that the aforesaid Richard Lokyer, Robert and Thomas and Thomas, together with etc, on Saturday 15 June 1381, with force and arms, namely swords, bows and arrows, broke the close and houses of the said Richard at the town of Saint Albans, and took and carried away his goods and chattels found there, namely choice linen and woolen cloth, bed-clothes, mazers, silver cups, silver spoons, bronze pots and pans, tubs, bronze and wooden vessels, timber and planks, and other necessaries of the home, to the value etc. And other enormities etc. To the grave damage etc. And against the peace etc. Whence he says that he suffered damages to the value of £100. And thereof he produces suit. And the aforesaid Richard Lokyer, Robert Marshalle, Thomas and Thomas appeared through their attorney, and say that they are not guilty and place themselves on the country. And the aforesaid Richard Scryveyner likewise. Therefore, the sheriff is ordered to summon twelve jurors here at the octave of Michaelmas 1382. The same Richard Scryueyner appeared in person against the aforesaid John, Walter, John, John and John on the aforesaid plea. And they did not come. And the sheriff was ordered to attach them. And the sheriff reports that they have nothing. Therefore, the sheriff is ordered to arrest them and produce them here at the aforesaid term etc. |
