Text (English translation)Be it remembered that the venerable Father Robert, Bishop of London, Chancellor of the lord King, delivered, by his own hands, here in the court, a certain record, in these words: Richard, by the grace of God, King of England and France, and Lord of Ireland, to his beloved and faithful Robert de Veer, earl of Oxford, Richard Waldesgrave, Robert Marny, Robert Gedyngtone, Richard Wythermersshe and Henry Spark, greetings. Know that we appointed five four three and two of you, of whom we wish the aforesaid Richard Wythermersshe be one, to examine by the oath of good and lawful men of the county of Essex, as well within liberties as without, whereby the truth of the matter may be more clearly known which persons entered the manor of Bradwell, after John Ewelle, recently our escheator in the county aforesaid seized that manor into our hand, because, by diverse inquiries held before Robert Tresilian and the aforesaid escheator by our order, it was discovered that Margaret, who was the wife of Simon Long, was a bastard and died seized of the aforesaid manor with pertinences that is held from us in chief in his demesne as of fee without heir, taken into our possession, and which persons seized the revenues and profits of the aforesaid manor in the meanwhile, how and in what manner, and thence to us in our chancery with all haste, that suitably it will be clearly and openly certified. And therefore we ordered you that, at certain days and places, that you five four three or two of you, of whom we wish Richard Wythermersshe be one, provide the inquiry you made concerning the premises, and furthermore having been done clearly and openly for us in our chancery aforesaid under your seals of five four three or two of you, of whom we wish Richard Wythermersshe be one, and send those seals whereby it was made without delay, and, indeed, by this writ we ordered the sheriff of our aforesaid county that, at certain days and places, you five four three or two of you, of whom we wish Richard Wythermersshe be one, make come and make known so many and such good and lawful men of their bailiwick, as well within liberties as without, whereby the truth of the matter may be more clearly known and inquired into. In witness whereof, we have caused these our letters to be made patents. Witnessed by myself at Westminster, 16 July 1382. The inquiry thence held by virtue of the aforesaid commission follows in these words: Inquiry held at Earls Colne before Robert de Veer, Earl of Oxford, and his associate lord justices appointed Saturday 27 September 1382 by virtue of a certain commission of the lord King for this inquiry devised by means of the oath of William Spore, Thomas Smyth, John Turner of Colne, Nicholas Nowers, Walter Albyn, John Prokenot, John Nichole, Richard Croucheman, Richard Quylter, Adam Sprot, John Dyn and William Beche, who say under their oath that John Coggeshale of Rivenhall on Thursday 27 June 1381, namely at the time of rumour, by the order of John Hende, citizen of London, as attorney of the same John, entered into the manor of Bradwell, then being in the hand of the lord King, and took seisin in the aforesaid manor with all its pertinences in the name of the aforesaid John Hende, and seized the revenues and profits of the same manor, for the use of the aforesaid John, from the aforesaid Thursday etc, until the following Michaelmas, it was said to the tenants of the same manor that they were to be intendant and answerable to the aforesaid John Hende as their lord of the aforesaid manor. And they say that the same John Hende made and appointed John Hurt his attorney to have regard for the aforesaid seisin and that the same John Hurt, Henry Stork, John Spencer, John Grigge and John Cogeshale broke down the door of the dovecote and took and carried away the pigeons, and seized all the profits of the said manor for the use of the aforesaid John Hende, from the aforesaid day to the following Michaelmas when Robert de Goldyngton, escheator of the lord King seized back said manor. And they say also that a certain William Golyrone, one tenant of said manor died in the meantime. And that the aforesaid John and the others refused to allow him to be buried until the aforesaid John Hende was seisin of a certain heriot. In witness whereof the present jurors aforesaid have put their seals, given the day, place and year abovesaid. By record of 6 Rich. II [1382‒3]. And lately, that is to say on 3 November in that same term, John Hurt and John Spencer appeared before the lord King at Westminster and surrendered themselves etc. And because the court is not yet advised to arraign them thenceforth etc the aforesaid John Hurt and John Spencer are sent away in the bail of John Ewelle et Thomas Lenham to have them before the lord King from day to day until etc. The sheriff is ordered that he not omit to produce, before the lord King at the quindene of Martinmas, wheresoever etc, the aforesaid John Coggeshale, and others, to answer the lord King regarding the premises etc. Afterwards this proceeding before the lord King against the aforesaid John Hende and John Cogeshale was delayed until the octave of Saint John the Baptist 1383. At which day the aforesaid John Hende and John Cogeshale appeared before the lord King at Westminster through Stephen de Falle their attorney and, being asked separately how they wish to acquit themselves as regards the trespasses and contempts aforesaid, they say separately that they are not guilty. And regarding this they place themselves on the country. Therefore, thence the jurors appear before the lord King in the octave of Saint John the Baptist, wheresoever etc. The same day is given to the aforesaid John Hende and John Cogeshale etc. Afterwards this proceeding against the aforesaid John and John before the lord King is postponed until the octave of Michaelmas 1385. At which day the aforesaid John Coggeshale and John Hende appear before the lord King at Westminster. And the jurors appear likewise. And hereupon it is proclaimed if any might wish to inform a servant of the lord King of his attorneys regarding the aforesaid trespasses and contempts that he should then appear etc and nobody appears etc. And the aforesaid jurors, elected and tried to this, say under their oath that the aforesaid John Coggeshale and John Hende are not guilty of aforesaid the trespasses and contempts. Therefore, they may thence go free etc.
