Text (English translation)Berkshire. Concerning Almaric de St. Amand, required to render to the King an account of the revenues, lands and tenements, and regarding the goods and chattels of Simon Harwe called Lokyngton, and diverse others who had risen up against their liege. It was ascertained in the originalia of 5 Rich. II [1381‒2] etc., that the same lord King, through his letters patent, under his great seal, given at Havering-atte-Bower on 28 June 5 Rich. II [1381], appointed his beloved and faithful Warin de Lisle, Almaric de St. Amand, Thomas Berkele, John Lovell and whoever was sheriff of Berkshire at that time, jointly and severally, to capture Simon Harwe, John Aston, Richard Tallis and Thomas Goldsmyth of Abingdon, who recently rose up inimically against said King and the peace of said King, and conspired in order that this insurrection be made, and, to put them in the prison of the lord King until when the lord King, through his deliberation etc., and to seize and capture into the hand of the same lord King all the lands and tenements, goods and chattels, of Simon, Walter, Thomas, Geoffrey, John, Richard and Thomas themselves, wheresoever and whosoever's hands they be in, etc. The aforesaid Almaric was required to be here at the morrow of the close of Easter last [10 April 1385] ‒ together with Gilbert Talbot and Johanna, his wife, who was wife of the aforesaid Warin, who the sheriff of Oxfordshire and Berkshire returned at the morrow of the close of Easter 7 Rich. II [18 April 1384] as executors for the aforesaid Warin, because the aforesaid Warin died, just as the same sheriff likewise returned Thomas de Berkeley, knight, to this exchequer at the morrow of Hillary 7 Rich. II [14 January 1384], whom the said sheriff of Oxfordshire and Berkshire returned at the morrow of Hillary 8 Rich. II [15 January 1384] as holder of the lands and tenements which belonged to the aforeaid Warin; likewise, the aforesaid Thomas de Berkely, John Lovell, and Richard Brouns, who was then sheriff in said county of Berkshire ‒ to render to the King account of the revenues, lands and tenements, of the goods and chattels, of the aforesaid Simon Harwe called Lokyngton, Walter Oxebrugh, Thomas Diare, Geoffrey Barbs, John Aston, Richard Tallis and Thomas Goldesmyth of Abingdon, on 28 June 5 Rich. II [1381], seized and captured into the hand of the King under the pretext of the King's letters aforesaid. At the aforesaid morrow of the close of Easter the aforesaid Almaric did not come, but afterwards, namely at the morrow of Trinity [29 May 1385], the aforesaid Almaric came through William Stoke, clerk, his attorney. He says that he himself ought not reckon nor satisfy the King regarding the revenues, lands and tenements nor of the goods and chattels of the aforesaid Simon [et al.], nor of any other, because, he says the letters patent aforesaid did not arrive in his hand, nor did he capture, nor could hold, the aforenamed Simon [et al.] on the pretext of the letters patent aforesaid, nor did he himself seize, nor could he take possession of, any of their tenancies, goods and chattels on the pretext of the letters patent aforesaid, nor did he himself have any knowledge of the letters aforesaid etc. And this is put forward to prove in whatever court etc. He begs that the same Almaric be discharged regarding the revenues, lands and tenements, and of the goods and chattels of the aforesaid Simon [et al.]. It is said for the King that the letters patent aforesaid arrived in the hand of the aforesaid Almaric, and that he captured, and was able to hold, the aforesaid Simon [et al.] on the pretext of the aforesaid letters, and that he himself seized etc., diverse lands and tenements, goods and chattels of said Simon [et al.] in Abingdon, and elsewhere in the county of Berkshire, to the value of 1000l. and more, into the hand of the King on the pretext of the letters aforesaid., and that he himself had knowledge of the letters aforesaid etc. It is asked for the lord King that this be examined by a jury. And the aforesaid Almaric says that which he said before, and asks similarly. Therefore, let inquiry thenceforth be made, and it is ordered that the sheriff of Berkshire carry this out at the quindene of Michaelmas [13‒19 October 1385] etc., and the same day is given to the aforesaid Almaric de St. Amand etc. At which day the aforesaid Almaric came through his attorney and the aforesaid sheriff does not return the writ. Therefore, it is ordered that he carry out the like etc., at the quindene of Hillary [27 January‒2 February 1386], and the same day is given to the aforesaid Almaric de St. Amand etc.
