Text (English translation)Suffolk. Concerning Roger Rose of Bury and other men of the same town, to be discharged regarding 500m remaining from their 2000m fine, and the same 500m to be allocated to the abbot, prior and convent of Bury, by the charter of the lord King etc. Record that the lord King now, namely in Hillary term 9 Rich. II [1386], ordered this his writ, under his great seal, to the treasurer and barons of this exchequer etc., in these words: The King to his treasurer and barons of the exchequer greetings. When recently the men of the town of Bury, deprived of all grace, pardon and forgiveness in our parliaments of 5 Rich. II and 6 Rich. II etc., admitted to our grace for a fine of 2000m etc., we, on 17 May 6 Rich. II [1383], from our special grace and the assent of our council, for the relief and aid of the Abbey of Saint Edmund of Bury, which was often molested and imposed with many types of damages and losses by the men of the said town, and also for certain other reasons, we wished and granted, for ourselves and our heirs, that the prior and convent aforesaid might perceive and have 500m of the aforesaid fine for their own use. By means of diverse letters patent and writs of ours, we commanded both Roger Rose of Bury, and certain other persons, and our beloved in Christ of the Abbey of Saint Edmund of Bury, for said sum of 2000m to be assessed and assigned, and also raised and collected from the men of said town of Bury, and then be answerable to us, just as in our diverse letters and commands etc. You we command that, we being satisfied regarding 1000m of the aforesaid fine, you thus assign to the aforesaid prior and convent said 500m aforesaid granted by us from the aforesaid men as stated, and also etc., that afterwards the same prior and convent is satisfied regarding the said 500m allocated at said exchequer. Witnessed by myself at Westminster, 16 March 9 Rich. II [1386]. The tenor of the letters patent aforesaid, mentioned in the writ, follows in these words: Richard, by the grace of God, King of England and France and lord of Ireland, to all people whom these present letters shall reach, greetings. May you know that when recently at the supplication of certain of our assisting magnates that certain persons of the same town of Bury, deprived of all grace, pardon and forgiveness in our parliaments of 5 Rich. II and 6 Rich. II, etc., were admitted to our grace for a fine of 2000m etc., thence they ought to pay 500m at the octave of Hillary next [20‒26 January 1383] and 500m at the feast of the Nativity of John the Baptist next [24 June 1383], and the remaining 1000m on this side of Christmas [25 December 1383] etc.[...] For the relief and aid of the Abbey of Saint Edmund of Bury, molested and imposed with many types of damages and losses by the men of the said town etc., we wish and grant for our ourselves and our heirs, that the prior and convent of the abbey aforesaid 500m of the aforesaid 1000m which the persons aforesaid are held to pay to us this side of Christmas etc., to have and perceive for their use before said Christmas [...] etc. Witnessed by myself at Westminster, 17 May 6 Rich.
