Text (English translation) | Buckinghamshire. Concerning Thomas Galian and Robert Thomas, whom the sheriff of Buckinghamshire returned as executors for Richard Molyns, lately one of the justices of the lord King for the maintenance of peace and stability in the county of Buckinghamshire, and William Molyns, whom the same sheriff returned custody of the lands and tenements which belonged to the aforesaid Richard Molyns, bound to deliver the estreats for the aforesaid Richard, the justice aforesaid. It was ascertained in the originalia of 5 Rich. II [1381‒2] etc., that the same lord King, because a great many criminals, in diverse associations and covenants, in diverse parts of our kingdom of England, against the loyalty and allegiance owed by the traitors to their said King, inimically made and perpetrated diverse treasons, murders, arsons, and other intolerable and unprecedented wrongs in the recent uprising, etc., the same lord King, from the advice and agreement of the peers and magnates aiding the lord King in the then last parliament, wishing the peace of his people be stabilized and strengthened etc, appointed, through his letters patent under his great seal dated 8 March 5 Rich. II [1382], his beloved Henry Grey of Wilton [Bucks.], Richard Molyns, Thomas Sakevill, John Nerunt, Thomas atte Lude, William Naffreton, Simon Arches, John Tryngham junior, Robert de Luton, John Rede, Alan de Ayete, Thomas Covelle, jointly and severally, of whom some of the aforesaid, William Naffreton and John Rede was a justice, for the peace of the said King in the county of Buckinghamshire etc. [an extensive description of their commission follows]. Thomas Galyan and Robert Thomas, whom the sheriff of said county of Buckinghamshire returned at the quindene of Easter last [17‒23 April 1385] as executors of the aforesaid Richard Molyns, because the same Richard died, etc., and William Molyns whom said sheriff returned at the quindene of Trinity last [12‒18 June 1385] as heir and holder of the lands and tenements that belonged to the aforesaid Richard, were required to be here at the quindene of Michaelmas [13‒19 October 1385] to deliver for the aforesaid Richard de Molyns, together with the other justices aforesaid, the estreats of his sessions. At the aforesaid quindene of Michaelmas the aforesaid Thomas Galyan and Robert Thomas came through John Wicombe, their attorney, and the aforesaid William Molyns did not come at the aforesaid quindene, but afterwards, namely have gone into default, the aforesaid William Molyns came in the custody of Thomas de Wodestok, earl of Buckingham, etc., by means of William Hungate, his attorney. They say, namely Thomas Galian and Robert Thomas for themselves in protest, that they did not know themselves to be executors of the aforesaid Richard de Molyns. The aforesaid William de Molyns is well aware that he is himself heir to the aforesaid Richard de Molyns, and that all the lands and tenements, which belonged to the same Richard on the day he died, are in the hand of the lord King etc. |
