Text (English translation)Worcestershire. Regarding John Hambury, a justice of the lord King, appointed to examine the uprising against his allegiance, the aforesaid justice to deliver his estreats of sessions. It was ascertained in the originalia of 5 Rich. II [1381‒2] etc., that the same lord King, because a great many criminals, in diverse associations and covenants, in diverse parts of our kingdom of England, against the loyalty and allegiance owed by the traitors to their said King, inimically made and perpetrated diverse treasons, murders, arsons, and other intolerable and unprecedented wrongs in the recent uprising, etc., the same lord King, from the advice and agreement of the peers and magnates aiding the lord King in the then last parliament, wishing the peace of his people be stabilized and strengthened etc, appointed, through his letters patent under his great seal dated 8 March 5 Rich. II [1382], his beloved Henry, bishop of Worcester, Thomas de Beauchamp, earl of Warwick, John Bottetourt, knight, Walter Cokesey, knight, Henry Arden, knight, John Sapy, knight, Richard Fiton, knight, John atte Wode, knight, John Russell, knight, John Beauchamp of Holt, Alexander de Befford, Roger Corbet, John Hambury, Robert Burgylon, John Catesby, John Cassy, Richard Ruyhale junior, Henry Bruyn, Richard Tendebury, jointly and severally, of whom some of the aforesaid, Robert Burgylon, John Catesby, and John Cassy was a justice, for the peace of the said King in the county of Worcestershire etc. [an extensive description of their commission follows]. The aforesaid John Hambury was required to be here at the quindene of Easter this term [17‒23 April 1385], to deliver along with the other aforesaid justices all extents of their sessions. At the aforesaid quindene the aforesaid John did not come but later, that is to say after default, the aforesaid John came through Henry Webbe, his attorney, and he says that the aforesaid letters patent never arrived in the hand of the aforesaid John Hambury nor were any sessions carried out under the pretext of the letters aforesaid, nor did he have any knowledge of the aforesaid letter etc., nor did any estreats arriving in the hand of the aforesaid John Hambury. This is put forward to prove in any court etc., and the same John Hambury begs to be discharged regarding the aforesaid estreats. For the King it is said that the letters patent aforesaid arrived in the hand of the aforesaid John Hambury, and that he himself conducted diverse sessions on the pretext of the letters patent aforesaid, etc., and that diverse estreats of his sessions arrived in the hand of the aforesaid John Hambury. And it is asked for the lord King this be examined by a jury, and the aforesaid John Hambury says that which he said before and begs similarly. Therefore, let inquiry be made, and it is ordered that the sheriff of Worcestershire carry this out at the quindene of Trinity [12‒18 June 1385] etc., and the same day is given to the aforesaid John Hambury.
