Text (English translation)Concerning William de Wyhum, John de Seyton, Elenora, who was the wife of John de Towtheby, William de Bolteby, Andrew Luterall, knight, John Rocheford, knight, Andrew de Leek, John Copeldyk, Simon Symeon and Thomas de la Launde, justices, bound to deliver the estreats. It was ascertained in the originalia of 5 Rich. II [1381‒2] etc., that the same lord King, because a great many criminals, in diverse associations and covenants, in diverse parts of our kingdom of England, against the loyalty and allegiance owed by the traitors to their said King, inimically made and perpetrated diverse treasons, murders, arsons, and other intolerable and unprecedented wrongs in the recent uprising, etc., the same lord King, from the advice and agreement of the peers and magnates aiding the lord King in the then last parliament, wishing the peace of his people be stabilized and strengthened etc, appointed, through his letters patent under his great seal dated 8 March 5 Rich. II [1382], his beloved John, king of Castile and León, duke of Lancaster, John, bishop of Lincoln, Robert Wylnghby, knight, William de Bardolf, knight, Philip de Darcy, knight, John Crecy, knight, Philip le Despenser, knight, Ralph de Cromwell, knight, Anthony Malore, knight, Andrew Loterell, knight, John Rochford, knight, Ralph Paynell, knight, William Haule, knight, Robert Leek, knight, Andrew de Leek, John Towtheby, John Copeldyk, William Skypwyth, Henry Asty, Simon Symeon, John Poucher, John de Bissy, William de Spaigne, William de Kelk, Robert Cumberworht, Thomas de la Launde, John de Rocheford, Thomas Claymond, John de Hawe, Thomas de Pynthebek, Richard de Launde, William Michell, and William de Skypwyth junior, jointly and severally, of whom some of the aforesaid, William de Skypwyth, Henry Asty, Thomas Claymond, John de Hawe, Thomas Pynchebek was a justice, for the peace of the said King in the county of Lincolnshire etc. [an extensive description of their commission follows]. At the quindene of Easter 7 Rich. II [25 April‒1 May 1384] the sheriff of Lincolnshire returned William de Wyhum and John de Seyton, chaplain, as executors for the aforesaid John Crecy, as he did at the exchequer in the quindene of Michaelmas 7 Rich. II [13‒19 October 1383], because the same John died. Also, on said quindene of Easter, Elinora, who had been the wife of the aforesaid John de Thowthby, and William de Boltby, parson of the church of Waltham [Lincs.], the aforesaid sheriff returned as executors of the aforeaid John de Thowthby, because the same John died. Andrew Lovell, knight, John Rocheford, knight, Andrew de Leek, John Copeldyk, Simon Symeon and Thomas de la Launde were required to be here at the the quinene of Michaelmas, this term [13‒19 October 1384], that is to say William de Wyham, John de Seyton, Elinora and William de Bolteby, to deliver for the aforesaid John Crecy and John Thowtheby, together with all the justices aforesaid, all estreats of their sessions. At the aforesaid quindene of Michaelmas, the aforesaid Wyham, John de Seyton, Elinora, William de Bolteby, Andrew de Loterell, knight, John Rocheford, knight, Andrew de Leek, John Copeldyk, Simon Symeon and Thomas de la Launde did not come, but afterwards, on 28 November, they all came through Robert Kele, their attorney. And they say that they themselves ought not deliver any estreats of the premises, because, they say, or - more specifically - William Wyham and John de Sexton say for themselves, that the letters patent aforesaid did not arrive in the hand of the aforesaid John Crecy nor did John conduct any session on the pretext of those letters, nor did he himself have any knowledge of the letters aforesaid, nor did any estreats arrive in the hand of the aforesaid John Crecy, during his life, and neither did they, or any portion of them, arrive into the hand of the aforesaid Wyham and John de Sexton after the death of the aforesaid John Crecy. And this they put forward to prove etc. The aforesaid Elinora, who was the wife of the aforesaid John de Towtheby, and William de Bolteby, say, for themselves, that the letters patent aforesaid did not arrive in the hand of the aforesaid John de Towtheby, nor did the same John conduct any session under the pretext of the aforesaid letters, nor did he himself have any knowledge of the aforesaid letters, nor did any estreats arrive in the hand of the aforesaid John de Towtheby, during his life, and neither did any arrive in the hand of the aforesaid Elinora and William de Bolteby, after the death of the same John de Towtheby. This they similarly put for forward to prove etc. And the aforesaid Andrew Lovell, John Rocheford, knights, Andrew de Leek, John Copuldyk, Simon Symeon and Thomas de la Launde say, for themselves, that the letters patent aforesaid neither arrived in their hand, nor did they themselves conduct any session on the pretext of the aforesaid letters, nor did they themselves have any knowledge of the aforesaid letters, nor did any of them have any estreats in their hand. And this they put forward to prove. It is said for the King that the letters patent aforesaid arrived in the hand of the aforesaid etc., and that they themselves conducted diverse sessions under the pretext of the letters, and they had knowledge of the letters, and diverse estreats of their sessions arrived in the hand of the aforesaid etc. It is asked for the King that this be examined by a jury. And the aforesaid William de Wyhum, John de Seyton, Elinora, William de Bolteby, Andrew Lovell, John Rocheford, knight, Andrew de Leek, John Copeldyk, Simon Symeon, say that which they said before, and they ask similarly. Therefore, let inquiry be made, and it is ordered that the sheriff of Lincolnshire undertake this at the quindene of Hillary [27 January‒2 February 1385] etc., and the same day is given to the aforesaid etc.
