Text (English translation)William Delton By examination made in the presence of the Steward of the Marshalsea and John Broker coroner of the court of the Marshalsea at Southwark on the Saturday before the feast of St Martin in the fifth year of King Richard the Second since the conquest [9 November 1381], William acknowledged that Thomas Hardyng and others whose names are written below gathered together by the procurement and incitement of the said Thomas in a brewery at Linton Heath [in Kent] on Monday 30 September in the fifth year of King Richard. Following discussion there among them it was agreed that Thomas Colepepir knight, Thomas Trevet knight and John Freningham should be captured by night and killed. And William further said that Nicholas Bekes would come to them out of Romney Marsh with 32 armed men and 60 archers for their solace and support and he said that Richard atte Hale would come to them from the parts of Charing [near Ashford in Kent] and promised them as above about 18 fighting men. And William said that Thomas Hardyng and Robert Semyng with his consent made a great congregation in a great wood next 'la batayle' called 'Deperfeld' to prosecute and sustain their plans and that the said Thomas Hardyng nominated deputies under him to govern and lead the said people. And William said that Nicholas Bekes was placed in the court of various people (ad curiam diuersorum) to explore their intentions against the commons and what part they wished to hold and if there was any dissension between them Nicholas should not return but remain there and with the support of Thomas and his associates undertake further investigation and certify his findings to Thomas and his associates, so that they would in this way create dissension between the King and his lord or between lord and lord in order that the said Thomas and his associates could join one party with force of arms in order to resist and destroy the other party and especially to destroy the party of the king. And William said that a certain Roger Sprynger of Cobham [in Kent] was sent into the county of Essex to agitate incite and congregate the people there in support of the aforesaid proceedings to overthrow and destroy the kingdom. William was asked whether he could have escaped from the society of the aforesaid malefactors, and replied that he could have done. 4060Confession of William DeltonWilliam Delton describes the meeting of Thomas Hardyng and others at Linton and how they conspired to kill Thomas Colepepir, Thomas Trevet and John Freningham. They planned to be joined by Nicholas Bekes who would bring with him 32 armed men and 60 archers from Romney Marsh, and 18 more armed men were expected from Charing, near Ashford. The same Nicholas Bekes was also intended to be sent as a spy into the courts of noble men, in order to create dissent between the king and his lords, with the intent to 'destroy the party of the king'. Finally, they planned to send a man called Roger Sprynger of Cobham into Essex to foment revolt in that county.
