Text (English translation)Middlesex. Isabella Chapman of London was attached to respond Thomas Fourneys in a plea that with force and arms she broke the close and houses of the same Thomas at Mile End and there assaulted the people and servants and beat, wounded, imprisoned and evilly handled them, and threatened his tenants so greatly and inflicted injuries and physical inconveniencies of such size that they completely withdrew from the said Thomas' tenement, and the same Thomas could not bring his other tenants to dwell in their tenements because of fear that they would encounter the said Isabella, so that the aforesaid tenements remained uninhabited for a long time, and the said Thomas lost the services of his men and servants and the profits from his tenants for a long time, and [she inflicted] other enormities etc. to the grave damage etc. and against the peace etc. And therefore the said Thomas by his attorney Thomas Crowe impleaded that the said Isabella on Friday after Corpus Christi 4 Richard II (14 June 1381) with force and arms broke the close and houses of the same Thomas at Mile End and there assaulted the people and servants, namely his servants John Lynne and Ralph Nassh, and beat, wounded, imprisoned, namely for the following three days, and evilly handled them and there threatened his tenants, namely John Smyth and Richard Smyth, so greatly and inflicted injuries and physical inconveniencies of such size that they completely withdrew from the said Thomas' tenement, and the same Thomas could not bring his other tenants to dwell in their tenements because of fear that they would encounter the said Isabella, so that the aforesaid tenements remained uninhabited for a long time, namely for half a year, and the said Thomas lost the services of his men and servants and the profits from his tenants for a long time, namely a quarter of a year, and [she inflicted] other enormities etc. to the grave damage etc. and against the peace etc. and thus he says he suffered damages of £100 and thereupon he brings suit etc. And the aforesaid Isabella in her own person comes and defends the force and injury and she says that she is not guilty and places herself upon the country and the said Thomas does the same; jurors to come before the king's bench in the octave of Hilary wheresoever etc. At which day the parties by their attorneys appear; sheriff does not sent writ so jurors to come in quindene of Easter next ... A day is given etc.
