Text (English translation) | Cambridgeshire. John Saffrey is in mercy for multiple defaults. The same John attached to answer Thomas de Swaffham on a plea that, together with John Wakelyn of Quy, John Heynessane, smith, Alan Bayhe, Peter the Eyr and Richard Gadeyere, with force and arms he broke the closes and houses of the said Thomas at Reach and Little Wilbraham and took and carried away the timber from the aforesaid houses, and also other goods and chattels of his to the value of £40 found in the same, and inflicted other enormities on him, to the grave damage of the said Thomas Swafham, and against the King's peace. And whence the same Thomas Swafham complains in person that on Sunday 16 June 1381 the aforesaid John, with force and arms, namely swords, bows and arrows, broke the close and houses of the said Thomas Swafham at Reach and Little Wilbraham and took and carried away timber, namely the posts, rafters and shutters of the aforesaid houses and his goods and chattels, namely wheat, malt, barley, beans, peas and oats, linen and woollen cloths, bronze and wooden vessels, and other necessaries of the home, and other enormities, to the grave damage, and against the peace, whence he says that he suffered damages to the value of £60. And thereof he produces suit. The aforesaid John appears through John More, his attorney, and says that he is not guilty of the aforesaid trespass and places himself on the country. And the aforesaid Thomas likewise. Therefore, the sheriff is ordered to summon twelve jurors for the octave of Trinity 1384. At which day the parties appear and the sheriff did not send the writ. Therefore, as previously the sheriff is ordered to summon twelve jurors for the quindene of Michaelmas 1384. The same day is given to the aforesaid John Wakelyn, John Heynessane, Alan Bayhe, Peter the Eyr and Richard Gadeyere in person here, together with the aforesaid John Safrey, regarding the aforesaid plea. |
