Text (English translation)London. The lord king sent his letters close to his beloved and faithful William Walworth in these words: Richard by the grace of God, king of England and France and lord of Ireland, to his beloved and faithful Thomas Walworth, greetings. For certain reasons the indictment made before you and your fellow men, lately our justices, appointed to chastise and punish certain rebels, who had risen against our peace and their allegiance in the city of London and elsewhere, for various treasons, felonies and other offences, whereby John Awedyn was indicted; as it is said [the case] should be determined before us and not elsewhere. Therefore, we order you to send us the said indictment and all which pertains to it separately and openly under your seal together with this writ; so that we shall have it next Thursday wherever in England we happen to be and that we can proceed further in the matter according to the law and custom of the kingdom. Witnessed by myself at Westminster on 20 April in the sixth year of my reign [1383]. The indictment mentioned in the said writ follows in these words: An indictment made before William Walworth, mayor of the city of London, and his fellow justices of the lord king, appointed to commence, hear and determine cases of various felonies and treasons committed by several evildoers who recently in the city of London, its suburbs and several other counties feloniously and treasonably rose against the lord king and assembled in illicit conventicles to the prejudice and not small harm of the same lord king and his faithful liegemen, committing murders, treasons and felonies in the lord king's presence, at the Guildhall in London on 17 June 1381, by virtue of the letters patent of the lord king addressed to the said justices, etc. The sworn jurors of Candlewick Street, namely Ralph Chakeden, Simon Thurston, John Devenyssh, Richard Fraunceys, John Elman, William Wymondham, Robert Fermery, Edward Woderton, Andrew Willy, Reginald atte Pole, William atte Dragon and John Pepe present that John Awedyn of the county of Essex was on Friday after the feast of Corpus Christi in the fourth year of Richard II (14 June 1381) one of the rebels against the lord king in the city of London, and that he, on the same Friday, as a captain of the said evildoers so rebelling, came with other above said evildoers and with a banner displayed, to the house of Nicolas Hawtot in the parish of St Swithin's London and there took possession of the said tenements and thence expelled the said Nicholas and all his family and made him turn every tenant of the said tenements to himself, etc. [paraphrase] The sheriff is ordered to arrest John Awedyn. John surrenders himself and is imprisoned in the Marshalsea, from where he is brought before the king's bench on 29 April 1383. There he presents a pardon from the king, dated 16 March 1383. Although excluded from the general amnesty the king granted the pardon at the request of the earl of Oxford. John also presented a letter of 'de non molestando' (letter of protection against further proceedings for the same offence) likewise dated 16 March 1383. Therefore under the authority of this (pardon) John pleads to be liberated from the king's prison. And after the inspection of the king's letters it is agreed that the said John can go without day, etc.
