Text (English translation)Suffolk. Concerning Roger Rose of Bury [St. Edmunds, Suff.], Edmund Fitz Lucas of Bury, and other men of the town aforesaid ... for 2,000m fine etc. Record that, though 2,000m was demanded, by means of a summons of this exchequer, from Roger Rose, Edmund fitz Lucas, James de Marham, John Osbern, Thomas de Fornham, Adam Waterward, Thomas de Ewell, John Toller, Thomas Goderd, Geoffrey Welman, Henry Wrotham, Thomas de Beiryngham, Richard White, Thomas Lacford, Alan de Denham, William Chevele, Thomas ate Pirye, John Berye, John Calfe and John Berard, all men of Bury, which, on the 22 December 6 Rich. [1382], they recognized themselves to owe, in full, for themselves and all others of the town of Bury; that they thenceforth pay to the king 500m at the octave of Hillary next [20‒26 January 1383] and 500m at the feast of the Nativity of John the Baptist next [24 June 1383], and the remaining 1000m on this side of Christmas [25 December 1383], and if they do not do so, they grant that the aforesaid money be raised from their lands and chattels in the county of Suffolk and elsewhere, that recognizance made on the condition that the same king pardon all persons of the town of Bury for all rebellions, treasons, seditions,...etc; the aforesaid Roger Rose etc, came before the barons here 15 February this term [1384], through William de Alyngton, their attorney. And they presented to the court a writ of the king under his great seal etc., that was enrolled in these words: Richard, by the grace of God, King of England etc., to the treasurer, etc. Though recently, at the supplication of certain of our assisting magnates, Roger Rose of Bury, along with all other persons of the same town of Bury, deprived of all grace, pardon and forgiveness in our parliaments of 5 Rich. II and 6 Rich. II, etc., were admitted to our grace for a fine of 2000m etc., thence they ought to pay 500m at the octave of Hillary next and 500m at the feast of the nativity of John the Baptist next, and the remaining 1000m on this side of Christmas etc., we wish and grant for our ourselves and our heirs, for the relief and aid of the prior and convent of Saint Edmund of Bury, molested and imposed with many types of damages and losses by the men of the said town etc., 500m of the aforesaid 1000m which is to be paid to us this side of Christmas, for the use of the prior and convent [of Bury]. And therefore, we command that you desist the demand, by means of a summons of the exchequer aforesaid, that the said sum of 500m thus owed to the prior and convent for our use or that of the prior and convent themselves, be raised by the same Roger and the other aforesaid recognitors; until the aforesaid matter might be adjourned from a fuller discussion of the council aforesaid etc. Witnessed by myself at Westminster, 15 February, 7 Rich. II [1384].
