| Text (English translation) | South Benfleet. Court held on Saturday 26th July 1382 At this court the lord grants anew to William Lok and Johanna his wife a cottage with appurtenances called Ballescote for the same William and Johanna and Williams heirs to hold at will of the lord for services and customary dues without prejudice etc. And they pay the entry fine [12 d] and swear fealty. At this court the lord grants anew after the burning of the court rolls there to William Hare and Johanna his wife a messuage, 13 acres of land and two acres of woodland with appurtenances formerly held by William Hare [...] William and his wife Johanna and the heir of the same William. The rent thereof William and Johanna pay for their whole lives per year at the usual terms in equal parts is 6 s 8 d for all services the owe thereof etc. except suit of court, tallage and heriot falling due after the death of William. Thus after the death of William and Johanna the heir of the same William have to perform for the said tenement all ancient services and customary dues obliged to do.
