Text (English translation)Court held at Berwick Berners on Tuesday, 7th January 1382. Richard Inthehale amerced 3 d for carrying off and removing outside the manor eight pieces of timber at the time of the rumour. He is ordered to give back the said pieces of timber by Hilary (16th January). And the dsame is ordered to return by the same feast day (16th January) a pair of double harrows with rings and clasps of iron, four cartloads of hay and a hatch (either a hay stack or an axe) he had himself removed at the time of the rumour. Richard Inthehale amerced 2 d for having in his possession at the time of the rumour a cow out of milk belonging to the Lord for nine days. John Herde amerced 4 1/2 d for having in his possession at the same time a cow in milk belonging to the Lord for nine days. Richard Inthehale pays the lord a fine of 16 s for recovery of his lands forfeited for his help in burning the court rolls, accounts, and other records of the Lord and manor of Berwick Berners at the time of the rumour to the prejudice of the lord and in contempt of the lord etc. as he has acknowledged. John Fynch, tenant of the lord, pays the lord a fine of 13 s 4 d for the same trespass in the same way as he has acknowledged. John Herde pays the lord a fine of 7 s 8 d for the same contempt and trespass in the same way as he has acknowledged. Richard Inthehale is ordered to raise the sign of the heriot over his tenement at Hales by Michaelmas next (29th September) under pain of 10 s. The homage presents that Thomas Smyth has (in his possession) and removed outside this manor at the time of the rumour a cartload of hay. Therefore, the same is ordered to return the said hay to the reeve of the lord under pain etc.
