| Text in Original Language | A nostre tresredoute seignur le Roi et soun sage consail ore en ceste presente parlement supplient ses poveres comuners; qe come nadgairs en le temps de rumere diverses meffesours aragez ount faitz diverses damages et trespasez as diversez gentz, et aprez ceo mesmez lez gentz qi ount heus et sustenez lez damagez et grevauncez susdits ount compellez autres diversez gentz par manasce de vie et de membre et par fauce imprisonement de faire a eux fynes et raunceons solomc lour volunte, de mesme ascun a qaraunt livrez, ascun a vynt livrez, ascun a pluis, ascun a meynz, la ou lez ditz gentz issint destruiz et par extorceon anientissez ne furent unqes de rien coupablez; et ascunez preignont pur la damage de dys marcz, cent marcz ou cent lyvres, et issint de graunde a pluis, a graunde destruccion et perpetuele oppression de voz ditz comuners, encontre la peas nostre dit seignur le Roi. | Text (English translation) | The poor commoners; lately, in the time of the uprising, wrongdoers committed damages and trespasses against various people. Those who suffered damages have compelled others, by threats to life and limb and by false imprisonment, to make fines and redemptions, some of £40 and some of £20, and others more or less than this, and have taken damages, some of 10 marks, some of 100 marks or £100, and others more or less than this. The parties ruined by these extortions are in no way guilty, and the matter is to the great destruction and perpetual oppression of the commons and against the king's peace. They request that the king and his council ordain in this present parliament a remedy for theses extortions, grievances, and oppressions, and that those who are responsible might be brought before the king and council and duly punished, as a warning to other such extortionists. |
