Text (English translation)Anne lately wife of John Hauchach beseeches our most excellent Lord the King that whereas the said John was forced by the rebels who lately rose against your peace to go with them for a time from which company he escaped as soon as he was able and when he had returned to his house and was there in your peace there came some of his enemies who from ancient hatred between them cut off John's head even though he had not been convicted of voluntarily joining the said rebels, may it please your royal majesty to command that the said Anne should have her dower lands which were held by her husband and which were taken into your hands, considering most powerful Lord, that her husband did not willingly join the said ribalds during his life and that the said Anne has no other means to support herself and her four children besides her dower and that she has no other means or trespass action by which she can secure her dower and sustenance.
General Information[1381-1385] John Hanchach of Shudy Camps in Cambridgeshire was involved in the Peasants' Revolt of 1381. The petition probably dates from the time of his posthumous conviction, when the Commons complained that the relatives of executed rebels were trying to recover their lands. Rot. Parl. vol. III, p. 175a, no. 1 assigns a petition concerning his rebellion to 7 Richard II (22 June 1383- 21 June 1384), but PROME, Parliament of October 1385, Appendix no. 10 assigns it to 1385. Given the uncertainty, a date range of 1381-5 is suggested.
