Text (English translation)The loyal people of Beverley complain that throughout this year, from the Monday in the week of Pentecost last, a proclamation was made throughout the said town by Piers de Santon and others by ringing a bell, that all manner of burghers and other commoners should be in the great hall of Beverley before Sir John Bigot and Sir John de Middelton, clerk, at the hour of prime, on pain of forfeiture of all their goods and imprisonment; and when they came they sealed a blank ragman in great number, and on this they were charged to come there to London to maintain their evils against the said good men; the which have come to Tottenham to the number of 60, some according to their will and some against their will; the which malefactors have taken various horses out of the common pasture against the will of those to whom the horses belonged; threatening from one day to another the said good men outside the king's court in a malicious manner; they go about with poleaxes and swords in the city of London, for which the said good men were in great fear of their lives; they request his most gracious royal majesty to make remedy in this case and to command that the said malefactors and ... in what manner they came there; and that Lady Isabel, aunt of the king, Sir Robert Rous, Richard Hembreg, Nicholas Prake, James Lyons and John Noselay, sergeants at arms and carriers of the king's writs and commandments to Beverley, be examined and charged to speak as to the truth of the rebellions of the said malefactors, and ordain that the complainants are able to safely return to Beverley as his lieges and reside without impeachment.
