Text (English translation)Huntingdonshire. Concerning the abbot of Ramse [Ramsey, Hunts.], required to answer the King regarding 106s. 2d., and also regarding 17 horses, 19 saddles with bridles, six swords, two shields, one hauberk [coat of mail] and one baselard [dagger], not appraised, that belonged to Robert Tavell and William Cobbe, traitors, and other unknown traitors, having risen up against their liege. It was ascertained in the roll of particulars of the account of Ralph Wykes, escheator of the lord King in the county of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire, concerning the revenues in the counties aforesaid from 12 November 4 Rich. II [1380] to 15 December 5 Rich. II [1381], that the same escheator did not answer regarding: two grey-coloured horses, one priced at 13s. 4d., the other priced at 10s.; one [black-coloured] horse, price 10s.; ten worn-out farm horses [stots], price 4s. 7d. per head; four young 'iumentos' [farm horses or bullocks], price 3s. per head; one bay-coloured horse, price 7s.; 11 saddles with bridles, 3s. 4d.; one tunic, price 2s. 6d.; one cloak, price 4d.; one poleaxe, price 4d.; one sword with two shields, price 12d.; one bow with six arrows, price 6d.; whence the sum total is 106s. 2d., and also, not appraised: six swords, two shields, one hauberk [coat of mail] and a baselard [dagger] which belonged to Robert Thawell on 13 June 4 Rich. II [1381] and also William Cobbe, traitors, and other unknown traitors to the king, having risen up against their liege on 13 June aforesaid, for that reason these goods and chattels arrived in the hand of the abbot of Ramesey, just as contained in a certain inquiry then held before the aforesaid escheator etc. The aforesaid inquiry made mention of the above in these words: Inquiry held before Ralph Wykes, escheator to the lord King in the county of Huntingdon, at Ramseye on Monday after the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross 5 Rich. II [16 September 1381], by means of the oath of John de la Crone, William Rodeseye, John Draper, Philip Skynnere, Martin Barkere, Walter Bocher, John Randolf, John Conpere, William Collyn, Robert Leche, Robert Lilleford, and John Rocher, who say, under their oath that Robert Tavell, who was beheaded at Ramesey, and William Cobbe, as well as all others unknown who rose up against their liege, had the same goods and chattels, namely: two grey-coloured horses, one priced at 13s. 4d., and the price of the other 10s.; ten worn-out farm horses [stots], price 4s. 7d. per head; four young farm horses [or bullocks], price 3s. per head, and one bay-coloured horse, price 7s., that arrived in the hand of the aforesaid abbot, and for which thenceforth he is answerable to the lord King. They say furthermore that seven horses arrived in the hand of the said abbot, the price of which the aforesaid jurors are ignorant. Likewise, they say, that there were 30 saddles with bridles worth 60d. in the hand of the abbot, and of which 19 saddles with bridles remain, the price of which the said jurors are ignorant. Furthermore, they say that there were: one tunic, price 2s. 6d.; one cloak, price 4d.; one poleaxe, price 4d.; one sword with two shields, price 12d.; one bow with six arrows, price 6d., in the hand of the said abbot. The aforesaid abbot was required to be here on the morrow of the close of Easter [Monday 30 April 1386], to answer and satisfy the king for 106s. 2d. for the aforesaid appraised goods and chattels, and also for all other unvalued goods and chattels. At the aforesaid morrow the aforesaid abbot came through Richard Bank, his attorney, and they say that he ought neither answer nor satisfy regarding the aforesaid goods and chattels, appraised or not appraised, apart from 40d. for the price of six horses etc., because, he says, that none of the aforesaid goods and chattels etc., that belonged to Robert Tavell and William Cobbe, nor other traitors to the king, arrived in the hand of the aforesaid abbot. The same abbot begs he be discharged of the aforesaid, besides 20s. for the price of the aforesaid six horses. It is said for the king that the abovementioned goods and chattels, appraised at 106s. 2d., and also all the aforementioned goods and chattels which were not, and diverse other goods and chattels which belonged to Robert Tavell, William Cobbe and others, to the value of 1000l. or more, at the town of Ramesey, elsewhere in the county of Huntingdonshire, arrived in the hand of said Abbot, beyond the aforesaid six horses, price 40d., and that the aforesaid six horses were worth 100l. or more. It is asked for the king that this be examined by a jury etc., and is ordered the sheriff of Huntingdon do this in the quindene of Trinity [beginning Monday 2 July 1386] etc.; and the same is given to the aforesaid abbot etc.
