Text (English translation)Surrey. Concerning William Hunt, valet of the King's chamber, to be discharged of the 29l. demanded from him regarding the goods and chattels of Ralph atte Croft ‒ indicted for felonies and treasons ‒ forfeited to the King for flight. Let it be recorded that, though 29l. from the goods and chattels of Ralph atte Croft ‒ indicted for felonies and treasons ‒ forfeited to the King for flight, are demanded from William Hunt, keeper of the manor of Kenyngton [Kennington, Surr.] by means of a summons of this exchequer, just as in the great roll of 7 Rich. II [1383‒4] etc., the aforesaid William Hunt came here in person before the barons on 6 May this term [1385] and complains that he is gravely distrained by the sheriff of Surrey and Sussex for the 29l. aforesaid, to be paid to the king, and this is without justice, because, he says, that the aforesaid Ralphe atte Croft had goods and chattels on the day he fled to the value of 29l. 13s. 9d., which goods and chattels the same William Hunte and William Broker, coroner of the King's household, seized into the King's hand and sold for 29l. 13s. 9d., and delivered the same to William de Pakynton, keeper of the wardrobe of the King's household, for the use of the same household; and he says that the same William de Pakyngton is himself burdened regarding the aforesaid 29l. 13s. 9d. in his account etc, and he begs that the rolls be inspected and that justice be made etc. Whereupon it is discovered in the receipts, issues and expenses made in the same wardrobe from the last day of September 5 Rich. II [30 September 1381] to the last day of September 6 Rich. II [30 September 1382], that the same keeper is himself burdened regarding the 29l. 13s. 9d. from William Corby, clerk of the market, from the goods and chattels which belonged to Ralph atte Croft of Lambuyth [Lambeth, Surr.], through the hand of William Broker and William Hunt, valet of the King's chamber etc., and that the 29l. 13s. 9d. for same goods and chattels priced was received by the aforesaid William Pakyngton from the aforesaid William Corby. And this he puts forward to prove in whatever court etc. He begs the same William Hunte be discharged of the aforesaid 29l. demanded from him concerning the goods and chattels of the aforesaid Ralph atte Croft.
