Text (English translation) | For John de Besyden, son of John de Besyden. The King to his treasurer and barons of the exchequer, greetings. On behalf of John Besyden son of John Besyden, it has been shown to us, with our recent understanding, that John himself was indicted concerning the last uprising in the county of Essex, and similarly to have fled; we appointed through our letters patent our beloved Thomas Bellehous and John Scotheye to investigate, by the oath of trustworthy and lawful men of the aforesaid county etc., what lands and tenements, goods and chattels the same John had at the time of the uprising aforesaid in Alflythele [Aveley, Essex] in the hundred of Chafford, what kind of land and tenements, goods and chattels etc., their price and true value, revenues per annum etc., and the same goods and chattels are to be placed in safe keeping etc. The same John was not convicted, nevertheless the tenements, goods and chattels of John are held and possessed in our hand by virtue of our aforesaid letters, and John is to answer to us in the aforesaid exchequer concerning the revenues of the lands and tenements, and, moreover, the true value of the goods and chattels aforesaid. The same John begged us to provide suitable remedy for himself in this matter. We were favourably inclined towards the aforesaid supplication, for this reason our letters close arose from our chancery. You we command that, if the same John provides sufficient security in your presence to answer us concerning the lands, tenements, goods and chattels aforesaid, in case the like rebellion or flight should come to pass, then for the aforesaid reason you should desist from such distrain of the same John in this matter, until the feast of the Nativity of John the Baptist next [24 June 1384]. Witnessed by myself at Westminster 14 February 7 Rich. II [1384]. |
