Text (English translation)Concerning the prior of Spyneye, bound to answer and satisfy the king regarding 4l. 11s. for the value of 14 bullocks that belonged to Richard Leicestr', a traitor to the lord King, drawn and hanged for felony. It has been ascertained in the rolls of particulars of account of Ralph Wykes, king's escheator in the counties of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire, regarding the revenues of the same escheator in the aforesaid counties from 12 November 4 Rich. II [1380] to 15 December 5 Rich. II [1381], that the same escheator did not answer for 4l. 11s. for the value of 14 bullocks that belonged to Richard Leycestr' of Ely ‒ traitor to the king, and who was drawn and hanged for the treason which he committed, having risen against his liege on 14 June 4 Rich. II [1381] ‒ on the Isle of Ely, bullocks which were indeed appraised at 4l. 11s., just as is contained in a certain inquiry before the aforesaid escheator, held by authority of his office; and that the aforesaid bullocks came into the hand of the prior of Spyneye and thenceforth he is answerable to the lord King. The aforesaid prior was required to be here before the morrow of Holy Trinity this term [6 June 1384], to answer and satisfy the king. At the aforesaid morrow the aforesaid prior did not come, but later ‒ namely after having gone into default ‒ the aforesaid prior came in person, and he said that he ought neither answer nor satisfy the king regarding the bullocks, or the value of the same, because, he said, long before the aforesaid 13 June 4 Rich. II [1381] and long before the aforesaid Richard Leycestr' committed felony, namely on Monday before the feast of the Ascension of our Lord 4 Rich. II [20 May 1381], 4l. 11s. ‒ 6s. 6d. per head ‒ was to be paid to the same Richard Leycestr' at All Saints next [1 November 1381]. And the same prior said that before said All Saints, Richard Leycestr' committed treason, for which he was drawn and hanged, and that Ralph Wykes, then king's escheator in the said county of Cambridgeshire, came by means of an inquiry, held in his presence, which said at that time the aforesaid sum had not been satisfied, and he asked for the release of the aforesaid 14 bullocks for the lord King as chattels forfeit to the said Lord king. The same prior stated that before said escheator asked for the release of the aforesaid bullocks and before said Richard Leycestr' undertook any treason, he himself killed five of the aforesaid bullocks for himself, for which he thus paid out 35s., and that he released the remaining nine bullocks to the aforesaid Ralph etc. He begs that the aforesaid Ralph come to answer and satisfy the king as to the premises. It is ordered that the sheriff of Cambridgeshire make the aforesaid Ralph Wykes, escheator, do this on the quindene of Michaelmas [13‒19 October 1384], to answer and satisfy etc. On which day the aforesaid prior came through John de Cradlay, his attorney, and the sheriff returned the writ etc. The same Ralph did not come, for this reason it is ordered that the sheriff distrain Ralph himself through lands etc. So etc., at the quinene of Saint Hillary [27 January‒2 February 1385]. And the same is given to the aforesaid prior of Spineye to be heard and made etc.

3693Exchequer case concerning the property of Richard Leicestre, thought to be in the hands of the Prior of SpinneyThe accounts of Ralph Wykes, escheator, show that he did not answer to the king for £4 11 s. for the value of 14 bullocks belonging to Richard Leicestre of Ely, traitor, who rose up on 14 June 1381 and was hanged. A previous inquiry found the bullocks to be in the hands of the Prior of Spinney, but he disputes this, saying that 5 of the bullocks had been killed by Leicestre, and that he released the other 9 to Wykes. Ralph Wykes is ordered to appear; he does not come, and is distrained of his lands.Go to incidents page
