Text (English translation)Essex. Concerning Thomas Bellous and John Scotheye, appointed to reckon together the revenues of the lands and tenements, and of the goods and chattels of John Besyden, son of John Besynden, indicted regarding the uprising, having made rebellion against his liege. It has been ascertained in the originalia of 5 Rich. II, roll 29, that, on 5 July 5 Rich. II [1381], the same lord King appointed Thomas Belhous and John Scotheye through his letters patent under his great seal etc., to investigate through the oath of good and lawful men of the county of Essex etc., the lands and tenements, goods and chattels of John Beseden, son of John Besydon ‒ who was indicted concerning the uprising, having made rebellion against his liege, and who fled for this reason ‒ in Alfithele [Aveley, Essex] in the hundred of Chafford at the time of the aforesaid uprising, what kind of land and tenements, goods and chattels there were, and how much the lands and tenements are worth per annum, and also regarding the price and true value of the same goods and chattels; and the same lord King ordered the same goods and chattels be placed in safe custody etc. Thomas Belhous and John Cotheye were required to be here before the morrow of Holy Trinity, this term [6 June 1384], to render to the king account of the revenues of the lands and tenements and of the goods and chattels of the aforesaid John de Besiden, the son. And at the aforesaid morrow the aforesaid came through Walter Waltham, their attorney and they say that they themselves are not sufficiently informed at present to answer regarding the premises. They ask a further day, by the court's grace, before which they will be able to be informed. It was granted to them and they were given until the next quindene of Saint John the Baptist [8 July 1384] etc., on which day they came through their said attorney and brought here a writ of the king under his great seal, enrolled in these words: Richard, by the grace of God, king of England and France, and lord of Ireland, to the treasurer and barons of the exchequer, greetings. [Repeats details of appointment] And we, later, wishing to be informed about the tenor of the indictment made in the presence of Robert Tresilian and his colleagues, his late justices, towards diverse treasons and felonies and other wrongdoings at the time of the aforesaid uprising in the aforesaid county etc., concerning which the aforesaid John Besyden was indicted etc., we commanded by means of a certain bill of ours etc., in our chancery it was determined that there is no indictment regarding any treasons and felonies against John Besyden himself. To you we command that a demand be made by means of a summons of the exchequer that the same Thomas and John Scothey answer us regarding the goods and chattels aforesaid or regarding the value of the same, and then themselves be discharged and quit etc. Witnessed by myself at Westminster 14 July 8 Rich. II [1384]. Muskham. It is declared to the aforesaid Thomas Belhous and John Scotheye that they should proceed now without delay, save always for the action of the King etc.
