Text (English translation) | Norfolk. Concerning Henry Bettes of Felmyngham [Felmingham, Norfolk] and Agnes, at one time the wife of Geoffrey Listere of the same, bound to answer and satisfy the king regarding the goods and chattels of the same Geoffrey Lystere, beheaded for treason, valued at 33s. 9d. It has been discovered, in the roll of particulars of account of John Rede, escheator of the king in the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk, concerning the revenues of the same escheator in the aforesaid counties from 25 October 5 Rich. II [1381] to 12 December 6 Rich. II [1382], that the same escheator did not answer regarding 33s. 9d. for the value of goods and chattels of Geoffrey Lystere of Felmyngham [Felmingham, Norfolk], traitor and leader in the uprising against his liege and beheaded on the aforesaid occasion by the people of England. For that reason, said goods and chattels came into the hand of Henry Bettes of Felmyngham, and Agnes, former wife of said Geoffrey Lystere, for which they are since answerable, just as is contained in a certain inquiry before the aforesaid escheator, held at Worsted [Worstead] in the county of Norfolk, 8 January 5 Rich. II [1382]. John Leem, Nicholas Spriggy, John de Whitewell, William Roys, Roger Roys, John Faucon, John Wacy, William de Follwe, Phillip de Colchestr', John Puddyng, John Dunnyng, John Robynson and Ralph Lystere, jurors, said, under their oath, amongst other things, that Geoffrey Lystere of Felmyngham, traitor and chief rebel, on Monday after Corpus Christi, 4 Rich. II [13 June 1381], opposed his liege, and who was beheaded on that occasion by the people of England, had, on the day he died, goods and chattels to the value of 33s. 9d., which came into the hand of Henry Bettes of Felmyngham and Agnes, former wife of said Geoffrey, for which they are then answerable to the lord king. The aforesaid were required to be here by the morrow of Trinity [18 May 1383], this term, to answer and satisfy to the lord king of 33s. 9d. aforesaid for the price of the goods and chattels aforesaid. And on the aforesaid morrow the aforesaid did not come, but shortly later, namely in the octave of Trinity [12‒18 June 1384], this same term, the aforesaid Henry and Agnes came through Thomas de Harleston, their attorney. And they say that, regarding the aforesaid 33s. 9d. for the price of the goods and chattels aforesaid, they ought neither answer nor satisfy the king for any part thenceforth. Because, they say, that no goods and chattels that belonged to the aforesaid Geoffrey Lystere on the day which he made the aforesaid treason, came into the hand of the aforesaid Henry Bettes and Agnes, neither at any time after, etc. And this they offer to prove etc. It is said for the King that diverse goods and chattels, which belonged to the aforesaid Geoffrey Lystere from the treason aforesaid and after, to the value of 33s. 9d. and more, came into the hand of the aforesaid Henry Bettes and Agnes after the aforesaid treason was made. And this he begs be examined for the lord king by means of a jury. And the aforesaid Henry Bettes and Agnes say that which they said previously. And they ask similarly. Therefore, let it be then investigated. And it is ordered the sheriff of Norfolk do this in the quindene of the Holy Baptist [8 July 1383] etc. From inspection of Felmyngham etc. And the same day is given to the aforesaid Henry and Agnes, who was the wife of Geoffrey Lystere, to be heard and made etc. |
