Text (English translation)For John Saferay The King to his treasurer and barons of the exchequer greetings. When, on the 22 November 5 Rich. II [1381] we pardoned John Saferay of Stowe Cumquy [Stow-cum-Quy, Cambs.] for whatever treasons, felonies and transgressions committed in the insurrections of May, June and July last [1381] by a great many of our people against our peace, for which he was indicted, we then restored to him his goods and chattels, appraised at 20l. 2s. 6d., forfeit from that cause, so long as he is not one of the principals of said uprising, or concerning the death of the venerable father Simon [Sudbury] of good memory, late archbishop of Canterbury, or of brother Robert Hales, late prior of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem in England, at that time our treasurer, or John de Cavendissh, late our chief justice, or regarding the burning of the manor of Savoy or house of Clerkenwell, or the death of the prior of Bury. Moreover, our justices and others of our council reason that that the lands and tenements of the aforesaid John should be restored and wholly released, and we order that Robert Pays, our escheator, should deliver to that the same John the lands and tenements aforesaid with pertinences, together with the revenues arising since the aforesaid 22 November etc. We command that you desist the demand, by means of a summons of the exchequer, that the aforesaid John answer us regarding the revenues and profits of the lands and tenements aforesaid from the aforesaid 22 November, and so John himself, as the escheators and our sheriffs of the county aforesaid, and also others whosoever, are to be discharged and quit etc. Witnessed by myself at Westminster, 24 January 6 Rich. II [1383].
