Text (English translation)For Robert Stangate and John Raynold of Stangate [Stansgate, Essex]. The King to his treasurer and barons of the exchequer greetings. Robert Stangate and John Raynolde of Stangate [Stansgate, Essex] have shown us that, although on 4 June, 49 Edw. III [1375] they themselves had acquired from William Cobborne of Fobbing, for themselves and their heirs, one messuage and one courtyard, half of one marsh called Wodewyk, one marsh called Northope, one cottage and one acre of land with pertinences, in the vill of Fobbyng [Fobbing, Essex], under the name of all lands and tenements that the aforesaid William had in the aforesaid vill on said 4 June, and subsequently the same William was drawn and hanged for hostile rebellion against our peace and disturbance of our allegiance, through which all lands and tenements of William himself became forfeit, and even though the same William may have, at no time after said 4 June, had any estate in said messuage, courtyard and moiety, through that alone he was able to forfeit said messuage, courtyard and moiety, likewise in spite of this, with the opportunity for forfeiture, the messuage, courtyard and moiety, of the very William, were seized into our hand by Robert Goldyngton, lately our escheator in the county of Essex, and they are thus for this reason in our hand to the grave prejudice of Robert and John themselves and by their disinheritance, their manifest ruin, over which it is beseeched to us that remedy be attended to. And because we wish etc... we command that, having seen the aforesaid charter of acquisition and having summoned the aforesaid late escheator before yourselves, should he still be alive, and the others who you might consider should be summoned and heard, Robert and John themselves, over the premises of the grievance, that you cause full and swift justice to be made over the premises, as for us, as for the same Robert and John, just as just as by rights and according to law and custom etc. Witnessed by myself at Westminster 8 February, 6 Rich. II [1383].
