Text (English translation) | Essex. The Prior of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England [John de Redington], plaintiff, by his attorney John Bretton appears against Richard Kent, tailor, John Galand, cordwainer, William Smyth of Uplond [unidentified], senior, William Smyth of Uplond [unidentified], junior, John Caumpe and William Osbern of Ingatestone, defendants, on a plea that with force and arms they broke the close and the houses of the said prior at Ingatestone and took and carried away the timber of the said houses and other of his goods and chattels found there worth £20. And they burnt his charters, deeds, rolls, rentals and other muniments they found there and they committed other enormities to the grave damage of the said prior and against the king's peace etc. The defendants do not come. The sheriff is ordered to capture them etc. And the sheriff now reports that they cannot be found. Therefore, the sheriff is ordered, as before, to arrest them ... And to have their bodies to be in court here in the quindene of Easter ... Essex. Joan, Princess of Wales by John de Bretton her attorney, plaintiff, appears against Nicholas Ferrour of Doddinghurst, Richard Hunt of Navestock, John Dycat of Navestock, Walter Colyer of Paslow Hall [High Ongar], Richard Morkyn of Paslow Hall [High Ongar], John Quyntyn of Magdalen Laver, John Piryman of Magdalen Laver, Stephen Gibbe of Magdalen Laver, John Umfrey of Magdalen Laver, John son of Richard Hunt of Navestock, John Tokeby of Navestock, Henry Fraunceys of Navestock, Henry Taillour of Navestock, John in the Sacche of Navestock, Thomas Bet of Navestock, John Danwe of Navestock, John Croussh of Navestock, William atte Felde of North Weald, John Charefoule of North Weald, tailor, John Chapman of North Weald, William Couper of North Weald, Richard London of Moreton, John Langhere of Navestock, tailor, Edmund Redyng of Epping, driver, and Richard Coweherd de North Weald, defendants, on a plea that with force and arms they broke the close of the said Princess at North Weald Bassett and took and carried away goods and chattels found there worth £200 and burnt charters, deeds, rolls and rentals and other of her muniments found there and they committed other enormities to the great damage of the said Princess and against the peace. And they do not come. And the sheriff had been ordered to attach them. And the sheriff now reports that the aforesaid Nicholas Ferrour is attached by John Hervy and Richard Hunt. And the said Richard Hunt [is attached] by John Mason and Henry Moston. And the said John Dycat [is attached] by John Corby and Henry Mason. Therefore, they are in mercy etc. And the sheriff is ordered to distrain them by all their lands etc. And to report about the profit etc. And that he has their bodies here in the quindene of Easter .... Joan, Princess of Wales by John de Bretton her attorney, plaintiff, appears against William Cole, Thomas Joce, William Rudelere, John Gyvayn, Thomas Batayle, Thomas Cok and John Broun, defendants, on a plea that with force and arms they broke the close of the said Princess at North Weald Bassett and took and carried away goods and chattels found there worth £100 and burnt her charters, deeds, rolls and rentals found there and they committed other enormities to the great damage of the said princess and against the peace. And they [the defendants] do not come. Sheriff is ordered to distrain the aforesaid William Cole and to arrest the aforesaid Thomas Joce and all the others. Sheriff reports that William Cole is distrained by his chattels worth 12d. He is mainprised by William Hardy, Richard Retour, John Malyns and William Hankyn. They are in mercy. Sheriff, as before, ordered to distrain him by all his lands. And to report about the profit etc. And that he has their bodies here in the quindene of Easter ....
