Text (English translation)Essex. Thomas Houlot by Richard Waltham his attorney, plaintiff, appears against John Thunderlee, John Petevyll, William Duk and John Couhoo, defendants, on a plea that with force and arms they broke the said Thomas' close and houses at Rayne and burnt his court rolls, rentals and other muniments found there and also took and carried away his goods and chattels found there worth £20. And other enormities etc. and against the peace etc. And they [the defendants] do not come. And the sheriff had been ordered to distrain the said John Thunderlee and arrest the said John Petevyll and the others. The sheriff reports that he had distrained the said John Thunderlee by chattels woreth 12d and mainprised by John West, Richard Clerk, Robert Smyth and William Hert. Therefore they are in mercy etc. And as before the sheriff is ordered to distrain him by all his lands etc... And that he has his body to be in court here in the quindene of Michaelmas. And about the said John Petevyll and the others he reports that gthey cannot be found. Therefore, as before, the sheriff is ordered to have their bodies in the court here in the quindene of Michaelmas ... (sheriff does not send writs, order repeated to be in court in St Hilary, Easter and Trinity) ...
