Text (English translation)Essex. The Prior of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England [John de Redington], plaintiff, by his attorney John Bretton appears against Richard Kent, tailor, John Galand, cordwainer, William Smyth of Uplond [Epping Upland?], senior, William Smyth of Uplond [Epping Upland?], junior, John Caumpe and William Osbern of Ingatestone, defendants, on a plea that with force and arms they broke the close and the houses of the said prior at Ingatestone and took and carried away the timber of the said houses and other of his goods and chattels found there worth £20. And they burnt his charters, deeds, rolls rentals and other muniments they found there and [they committed] other enormities etc. against the king's peace etc. The defendants do not come. As the sheriff has been often ordered that he should capture them etc. And to have their bodies to be in court in the week of Trinity. And the sheriff now reports that they cannot be found. Therefore, the sheriff is ordered that writs of exigent be issued against them from county to county, and unless they appear, they are to be outlawed... And to have their bodies to be in court here in the quindene of St Hilary.
