Text (English translation)Essex. John Cobbe of Danbury, tailor, was attached to answer Henry de Grey, knight, in his plea that he with force and arms broke the close of the said Henry at Danbury and took and carried away goods and chattels worth £40 found there and assaulted his men and servants and beat wounded and ill treated them so that the said Henry lost the service of his men and servants for a great time and he [John Cobbe] committed other enormities to the great damage of the said Henry and against the king's peace. And therefore the same Henry by John de Corbrig, his attorney, impleaded that the said John Cobbe on Tuesday after the feast of Corpus Christi 4 Richard II (18 June 1381) with force and arms, namely swords, bows and arrows, broke into the close of the said Henry at Danbury and took and carried away his goods and chattels, namely linen and woollen cloths, wooden, brass and copper vessels, firewood and other domestic utensils found there worth etc. and he assaulted there his retainers and servants namely John Shotyere and Johanna Shotyere and beat and wounded and evilly handled them, such that same Henry lost the services of of the same retainers and servants for a long time namely from the aforesaid Tuesday (18 June 1381) until the feast of Michaelmas following (29 September 1381) and other enormities etc. and to the grave injury etc. And against the king's peace. Wherefore he said he suffered loss and had damage worth £100. And therefore he brings this suit etc. And the said John Cobbe came in his own person. And he defends the force and injury whenever [it behoves them] etc. And he says that he [on the charge] of the aforesaid trespass of which he was indicted by the above-mentioned Henry he is not guilty. And he put himself on the upon the country. And the said Henry does the same. Therefore, it is ordered that the sheriff may cause him to come in the quindene of St Hilary, xii (jurors) etc. in which etc. and because not etc. to investigate by jury etc. whereas so etc. And upon this Richard Wythermerssh, John Glemham, John Luton and Robert Morden of the aforesaid county gave surety to have the body of the said John at the afore-stated term and so from day to day at every day of the trial as long as the jurors convene ... [the sheriff did not send the writs and the trial is postponed several times].
