| Text (English translation) | At the deliberation held at Maldon on Wednesday after the feast of St Thomas the martyr in the fifth year of the reign of Richard the Second [10th July 1381] before the said justices etc. Inquisition of the hundred of Dengie held on the aforesaid day and year upon the trial of John Bek of Maldon, John Maldon, herd [and?] farmer of Woodham Ferrers, Richard Proudfot of Bradwell on Sea, tailor, William Borefare of the same, John Pecche of Tillingham, John Dunnyng senior of Bradwell Bardolf [Bradwell on Sea], John Smyth of Lawling [Latchingdon], John Veltman of Bradwell on Sea, and John le Eyre of Ramsey Island upon the oath of Edmund de Doune, Richard Bussh, Henry Hale, Roger Bode, Henry Maldon, Simon Burgh, John Cok of Purleigh, Robert atte Merssh, John Salman, Adam Hervest, Walter Kyng, and William West who say upon their oath that the aforesaid John Maldon and Richard Proudfot are guilty of that which they have been indicted. Judgement is therefore given by the aforesaid justices that the same John and Richard are to be drawn and hanged, moreover they say that the aforesaid John and Richard do have neither chattel, land nor tenement on the day he committed the aforesaid felonies etc., furthermore they say that the other accused are not guilty of that which they have been indicted and that none of them withdrew himself from suit. Judgement is therefore given by the same justices that they are quit. |
