Text (English translation) | At a session held at Witham on Monday the day of the feast of St Mary Magdalene in the fifth year of king Richard the Second [22nd July 1381] before the same justices etc. Inquisition of the hundred of Witham held there on the above-said day and year by the oath of William atte Noke, Thomas Adam, Clement Clerc, Stephen Masoun, John Vynch, John Lambhirde, John Child, Thomas Heyward of Hatfield [Peverel], John Wasp, Adam Sprot, John Chippemere and John Turnour who say upon their oath that William Pampeloun of Terling treasonably broke into the house at Cressing Temple on Monday after the feast of Holy Trinity in the fourth year [10th June 1381], and that the same William on Tuesday next following [11th June 1381] treasonably broke into the house of Robert Leyham at Rivenhall and took hinges and hooks (hanges et hokes) to the value of 2 s., and he treasonably carried them away, and that the same William and Thomas Bakere of Maldon on Wednesday next following [12th June 1381] came to the village of Black Notley to the house of Clement Spicere and there they threatened the wife of the said Clement until she made a fine with them of 6s. 8d., which they treasonably took and carried it off. They also present that Simon Theccher of Great Waltham treasonably broke into the house of John Gildesburgh at High Easter on Tuesday after the feast of Holy Trinity in the above-said year [11th June 1381]. They also present that Oliver atte Hoo of Fordham unjustly dispossessed John Southe of Inworth of his free tenement in the same village against the laws of the king. They also present that William Wyse of Bradwell on Wednesday after the feast of Holy Trinity in the above-said year [12th June 1381] seized a certain horse of Henry Englis worth 6s. 8d. at Birdbrook and feloniously took it away. They also present that John Brookman, tailor, of Hatfield [Peverel] took on the same Wednesday [12th June 1381] at Fairstead from John Broun a pair of iron plates (j par de platis) worth 5 marks, a bell of a clock (unam campana unius clocke] worth 10s., and gold and silver, woollen and linen cloth to the value of 40s. and he feloniously carried them away. They also present that John Hyne and Henry Hyne obtained possession of two horses of the prior of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England at Cressing Temple worth 40s. They also present that William Payn of Witham obtained two cows of the said prior worth 20s. They also present that Geoffrey Wodebrid obtained 3 cows of the said prior worth 24s. They also present that John Hyne, Henry Hyne, John son of John Taillour of Braintree, chaplain, and Robert Cardemaker of Bocking, together with others unknown, obtained 12 bulls of the said prior each worth 13s. 4d. at Cressing. They also present that William Pampeloun obtained a piece of lead worth 8d at Cressing Temple . They also present [text breaks off] And therefore, the sheriff of the same county is ordered that he arrests those who are indicted in these rolls except those who were before the same justices acquitted, drawn, hanged, taken into custody and returned to prison accordingly those who were acquitted, drawn, hanged, taken into custody and returned to prison as it is more fully apparent in the rolls of this calendar so stitched together etc. And to guard them safely. So that he has their bodies before the aforesaid justices at the session at Braintree which will be held on Monday after the feast of the Nativity of the blessed virgin Mary in the fifth year of the reign of king Richard the Second [9th September 1381]. |
