Text (English translation) | At a session held at Colchester on Thursday before the feast of St Laurentius in the fifth year of the reign of Richard the Second [8th August 1381] before the said justices. Inquisition of the hundred of Lexden held there on the above-said day and year by the oath of William atte Park, Henry Whyssh, William Spore, William Beche, John Ovenyng(?), William Howe, William atte Holt, Robert Bolyne, Simon Gnethe, Richard Mathew, John Aylener, William Dameon who say upon their oath that John Flemyng, weaver, of Warley, Richard Janne of Warley, Benedict Onere of Warley, John de Dene of Warley, John Whelere of the same, John Northford of Stifford, John Morieux of the same, cooper, John Hierde of West Thurrock, Thomas Gelow of West Thurrock, William Frenssh of South Ockendon, William Rogger of the same, John Besyden, Robert Coydon, Stephen Taillour of South Ockendon, John Thurkild of Rochford, John Thurkild of Barling, Adam Gernawk of Barling, smith of Barling, John Gernawk, his brother and servant [famulus], John FitzSymond of Barling, Thomas Thurkild of Burnham on Crouch, Judd Gardiner of Barling, Laurence Trumpour of Leigh on Sea, William Pampelon, William son of Alexander Shephierde of Felsted, Clement, son of Robert Scharp of Felsted, John, son of the said Robert dwelling in in Dunmow, Thomas Bakere of Maldon, John Warner junior, Amicius Palmere, skinner, of Coggeshall, John Stalworth, barber of Chelmsford, John Smyth, servant of John Elmestede junior of Maldon, William Smart of Burnham on Crouch, dragger, John Leverich, servant of Robert atte Merssh, John Weylate, weaver, of Maldon, Thomas Kynget of Stisted, John Taillour of Fordham (drawn and hanged as is shown in the calendar) and John Bray (drawn and hanged as is shown in the calendar) of Ockendon, on Monday on the morrow of the feast of Holy Trinity in the fourth year of the reign of Richard the Second [10th June 1381] with other evil conventicles and enemies of the lord king treasonably pulled down the manor of Cressing Temple of the prior of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England and feloniously took and carried away divers goods and chattels they found there of the said prior to the value of £100, and furthermore on the same day they feloniously broke into the house of John Sewale, sheriff of Essex, and feloniously took divers writs of the lord king and rolls of the same king, which were in the custody of the aforesaid sheriff, and treasonably burnt them on Tuesday, the following day [11th June 1381], and also they were leaders of the evil conventicles and destroyer of the people of the lord king during the whole recent rumour. Also, the same jurors present that John Bowyere of Pleshey (hanged and drawn as is shown in the calendar) on the above-said Tuesday [11th June 1381] pulled down the manor of John de Gildesborough, knight, at High Easter with other evil conventicles, and furthermore on the same day he broke open the gaol of the bishop of London at (Bishop's) Stortford and a certain brother Andrew of the order of the Carmelites and John Ball the traitor, who were jointly held in the same castle, were treasonably released, and that he was a principal insurgent in prejudice of the crown of the lord king. Also, the same jurors present that Thomas Recher, Walter Debelon and John Bulbek on Monday after the feast of Corpus Christi in the fourth year of king Richard the Second [17th June 1381] with other evil conventicles entered with force and arms the manor of Stanway and took and carried away divers goods and chattels they found there of John de Stanstede, to the value of 20s., and they broke open two chests of the same John which were in the church of Stanway and tore out the court rolls of the said manor together with other muniments of the said John and burnt them, and furthermore on the same day they forcefully entered the chapel of the Holy Cross in the town of Colchester and took and carried away divers muniments they found there of the said John. They also present that John Symond of Belchamp Walter on Saturday after the feast of Holy Trinity in the above-said year [15th June 1381] rose up with a great common society and armed enemies of the king, namely more than 200 malefactors and he himself as their captain feloniously entered with them the rectory of William Askeby in the village of Gestingthorpe and he feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels found there of the said William to the value of £40, and they searched for the said William in order to kill and to behead him if he could be found there and to do this a certain person of his society carried an axe, and furthermore he took by threat from a certain John Mot a fine of 10s. otherwise they would have killed the same John Mot there etc. They also present that William Taillour and Adam Taillour of East Mersea on Friday the 14th day of June [1381] in the now fifth [recte: fourth] year of the reign of king Richard the Second at Brentwood assaulted Thomas Hynton together with other unknown malefactors and they wanted to kill the same there, and thereafter they made the same to follow them up to East Mersea until he made a fine with them according to their will, otherwise they would have killed the same. They also present that John Weylate of Maldon, weaver, on Monday after the feast of Holy Trinity in the fourth year of the reign of Richard the Second [10th June 1381] in the village of Coggeshall, with force and armed, namely with a certain pole axe, feloniously struck John Ewell, escheator of the lord king in Essex, twice in the neck and thereafter feloniously split the said neck with his own knife, and afterwards on the said day and year [10th June 1381] he feloniously broke into the house of the said escheator at Feering together with other malefactors and feloniously took and carried away writs and muniments pertaining to the said office as well as goods and chattels found there of the said escheator to the value of £100. Inquisition of the aforesaid hundred [Lexden] held there [Colchester] on the above-said day and year [8th August 1381] by the oaths of Thomas Revel, William Mount, John Rogger, John Pyccard, Jacob Kyng, John Beneyt, John Speneye of Wix, Roger Sagot, Thomas Broun, Richard West, John Burgh and John Gulle who say upon their oath that Robert Wodeham of Barking (drawn and hanged as is shown in the calendar) on Saturday after the feast of Corpus Christi in the fourth year of king Richard the Second [15th June 1381] feloniously broke into the Abbey of Barking with the evil conventicles he had assembled and he treasonably took and carried away the rolls, muniments and other evidences pertaining to the abbey and treasonably burnt them, and that the same Robert was at the said time a chief leader and maintainer of 300 malefactors at the before mentioned deeds. |
