Text (English translation) | Dengie [hundred] - At a session held at Maldon with the same justices on Wednesday after St Thomas the Martyr [recte: Wednesday after the translation of St Thomas] in the fifth year of king Richard the Second [10th July 1381] etc. Inquisition of the hundred of Dengie held on the aforesaid day and year [10th July 1381] by the oath of Edmund de Doune, John Staunford, John Salprest, Richard Bussh, John Salman, Walter Kyng, William West, John Midlyng, Henry de Maldon, John Cok of Purleigh, Roger Bode, and John Camside who say on their oaths that John Cobbe junior of Danbury, tailor, on Friday after Ascension [recte: Friday after Corpus Christi?] in the fourth year [14th June 1381] as one of the principal leaders of the evil society went from Danbury to Mile End against the law and crown of the king of England, and the said John afterwards said to John Fillow of Hatfield that he wished to kill William Dannebury, and he is a common thief. They also present that John Odyn of Althorne on Tuesday before Ascension [recte: Tuesday before Corpus Christi?] in the fourth year [11th June 1381] feloniously took a cow worth 10s. from John Bampton in the marsh of 'Bermerssh' [Burnham marsh], and he is a common malefactor. They also present that John Hardyng on Monday after Ascension [recte: Monday after Corpus Christi?] in the fourth year [17th June 1381] as a principal leader entered into possession of a certain tenement with appurtenances in the village of Norton Mandeville at the expense of Thomas Skelmersthorpe of London against the law of England etc. They also present that John Rinsell of Southminster on Sunday after Ascension [recte: Sunday after Corpus Christi?; 16th June 1381] with divers evil societies took, broke into pieces and despoiled the rolls of the bishop of London's manor of Southminster as a principal leader of those societies etc. They also present that Robert Chapman of Dunmow on Monday after the feast of the Holy Trinity in the fourth year of the present king [10th June 1381] went from this village to Cressing Temple and broke into the houses there and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels found there to the value of 100 s., and on the same day went to Coggeshall, and there he broke into the houses of John Sewale of the same and took and carried away goods and chattels found there to the value of £ 10, and John Sewale was nearly killed and other enormities inflicted on him etc. They also present that Peter Reyner on Monday before Ascension [recte: Monday before Corpus Christi] in the fourth year [10th June 1381] as principal leader with his evil society went to Cressing Temple and broke into the houses there and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels found there to the value of 100 s. and thus he went on the same day to Coggeshall, and there he broke into the houses of John Sewale there and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels of the said John found there to the value of £ 10 etc, and there he wanted to kill John Cok of Purleigh etc. Turn over for more [presentments] in this roll. Still the presentment as overleaf of the hundred of Dengie. Also, the same jurors written overleaf present that John Sparman junior of Purleigh on Sunday [recte: Monday] after the feast of the Holy Trinity in the fourth year of the present king [10th June 1381] came to Cressing Temple and there broke into the houses and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels to the value of 100s., and thus came to Coggeshall and feloniously broke into the houses of John Sewale there on the same day feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels found there of the said John to the value of 100s., and thus he went to South Fambridge Hall on the morrow after [11th June 1381] there feloniously took and drove away 6 sheep worth 9s. and he feloniously took and drove away a horse of William Danbury worth 20s. etc. Also, the same jurors present that Thomas Sawyer of Latchingdon as one of the principals of the evil society came on Monday after the feast of the Holy Trinity in the fourth year of the present king [10th June 1381] to Cressing Temple and there broke into the houses and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels to the value of 100s., and thus on the same day he came to Coggeshall and broke into the houses of John Sewale there and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels found there of the said John to the value of 100s. And on the same day he went to the marsh of John Bampton called 'Bermerssh' on Tuesday before Ascension [recte; Corpus Christi?] in the fourth year of the present king [11th June 1381], he feloniously took and drove away 20 sheep found there worth 24s. etc. They also present that Richard Coventre, labourer, dwelling in the town of Maldon, rose up with the company of enemies of the king on his own free will without coercion from anyone and went with them to the houses of John Gildesborough [Gildesburgh] and John Sewale of Coggeshall at Coggeshall, and on Monday on the morrow of the feast of the Holy Trinity in the fourth year of the present king [10th June 1381] he pulled them down and feloniously took and carried away gold and silver and goods and chattels found there to the value of 100s., and that the same Richard incited a certain Segoos Webbe of East Mersea to behead the Fleming John Preme of Maldon, weaver, at Maldon etc. They also present that the said Segoos Webbe beheaded the said John Preme at the same time and place on his own free will, and that he was a common thief and he rose up with the aforesaid company of enemies and went to divers places pulling down houses and he feloniously took and carried away divers goods and chattels, and he also broke into the houses of the said John Gildesburgh and John Sewale and feloniously took and carried away their goods and chattels to the value of 100s. They also present that Richard Proudfot of Bradwell on Sea, tailor in the hundred of Dengie (drawn and hanged as appears in the calendar), threatened John Gerveyn of Maldon that he would kill him and pull down his houses if he would not agree to do the aforesaid wicked deeds with him, and that the same Richard pulled down the houses of John Gildesburgh and John Sewale on his own free will and feloniously took and carried away their goods and chattels to the value of 40s. etc. They also present that Ralph atte Wode of Bradwell on Sea (acquitted as is shown in the calendar) was a leader of the same conventicles wickedly going to the houses of the said John Gildesburgh and John Sewale and Edmund de la Mare and pulled them down with the aforesaid conventicles and feloniously took and carried away the goods and chattels of the aforesaid John, John and Edmund to the value of 40s., and that the same Ralph and the above-said Segoos Webbe together with their evil conventicles burned the muniments of the lord Walter Fitzwalter at Maldon and John Bourchier, knight, at Baynards [in Mayland] etc. Inquisition of the aforesaid hundred [Dengie] held in the same place [Maldon] on the aforesaid day and year [10th July 1381] by the oath of Edmund de la Mare, Robert Gilbert, John Skynnere, Adam Dyere, William Brynklee, Hugo Broun, John Diere, John Pere, Laurence Newelyn, Walter Tannere and Richard Bocher who say upon their oath that Roger But of Maldon on Wednesday after the feast of the Holy Trinity in the fourth year of the present king [12th June 1381] as a leader of the evil society imposed a fine of 9 s. on John Snape of Maldon with [the help of] the aforesaid society, and he also said that he would despoil the houses of Cecilia Cokes of Maldon with his evil society, and he was also a common disturber of the peace of the lord king etc. They also present that John Bek of Maldon (acquitted as is shown in the calendar) and Clement Ode of the same on Monday on the morrow of the feast of the Holy Trinity in the fourth year of the present king [10th June 1381] were with force and arms at Cressing Temple and broke into the houses there, and they were common leaders of the evil society, and the said Clement feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels found there to the value of 10s., and that the said Clement on Friday after Ascension [recte: Corpus Christi?] in the aforesaid year [14th June 1381] feloniously killed Nicholas Davenant at Brentwood etc. They also present that John Warner senior, son of William Warner of Maldon on the same day and year [10th June 1381] went to Cressing Temple with his evil society and there broke into the houses, and thus he went to Coggeshall on the same day and broke into the houses of John Sewale there and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels found there of the said John to the value of 20s., and that the said John Warner feloniously killed there John Ewell, escheator of the lord king in Essex, on the same day etc. They also present that John Page of Maldon (acquitted as is shown in the calendar) on the same day and year [10th June 1381] as principal leader of the evil society with force and arms went to Cressing Temple and broke into the houses there, and on the following Tuesday [11th June 1381] he broke into the house of John Gildesburgh at High Easter and said he would break into the houses of William Danbury if he would not receive £10 etc. They also present that Adam Webbe, servant of John Chalunner of Maldon, on the above- said day and year [10th June 1381] broke into the house at Cressing Temple and on the same day broke into the houses of John Sewale of Coggeshall at Coggeshall and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels to the value of 100s., and also he feloniously broke into the houses of William Danbury. They also present that John Smyth, servant of John Elmestede junior, on the same day and year [10th June 1381] with his evil society broke into the houses at Cressing Temple, and on the same day he broke into the houses of John Sewale of Coggeshall at Coggeshall and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels to the value of 20s., and from the houses of John Ewell he feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels to the value of 100s. etc. They also present that William Skulle of Goldhanger and Richard Hedich senior on Tuesday after Ascension [recte: Trinity?] in the above-said year [11th June 1381] feloniously took and carried away 11 cows of John de Gildesburgh, worth £4, and a horse worth 10s. They also present that John Marchal of Rochford on Monday after Ascension [recte: Trinity] in the above-said year [10th June 1381] with his evil society broke into the house at Cressing Temple and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels to the value of 40 s., and that he broke into the house of John Sewale of Coggeshall and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels to the value of £20 etc. They also present that John Maldon, herd and farmer of Woodham Ferrers (drawn and hanged as is shown in the calendar), feloniously killed John Bernard of Danbury, potter, on Sunday after Ascension [recte: Trinity?] in the above-said year [26th May 1381 or 16th June 1381?] and that he wanted to kill William Danbury, and he is a common thief etc. They also present that Peter Brid of Tillingham on Monday after Ascension [recte: Trinity] in the above-said year [10th June 1381] with his evil society broke into the houses at Cressing Temple and there on the same day he feloniously struck John Ewell, escheator of the lord king, first, and he feloniously destroyed the rolls of the manor of Tillingham etc. They also present that Richard Proudfot of Bradwell on Sea, tailor (drawn and hanged as appears in the calendar), on Monday after Ascension [recte: Trinity] in the above-said year [10th June 1381] was a chief leader of the evil company, and broke into the houses at Cressing Temple with his aforesaid society, and on the same day he broke into the houses of John Sewale of Coggeshall and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels to the value of 100s., and he removed the lord king's books (libri domini regis) he found in the house of Richard Stacy, and also he disseized with his abovesaid society Florence Kelyng of Dengie, and he imposed a ransom of 40d. on a certain man called Geoffrey Homp of Asheldham etc. They also present that Ralph atte Wode of Bradwell on Sea (acquitted as is shown in the calendar) on Monday after Ascension [recte: Trinity] in the above-said year [10th June 1381] as chief leader of the evil company broke into the houses at Cressing Temple with his aforesaid society, and that, on the same day, he broke into the house of John Sewale at Coggeshall and feloniously took and carried away the goods and chattels to the value of 100s., and on the following Wednesday [12th June 1381] he broke into the house of Edmund de la Mare in Peldon and feloniously took and carried away the goods and chattels to the value of 100 s., and he carried the lord king's books on a pitchfork from the house of the said Edmund up to Mile End before the lord king etc. They also present that William Borfare of Bradwell on Sea (acquitted as is shown in the calendar) on Wednesday after Ascension [recte Trinity] in the above-said year [12th June 1381] together with other malefactors broke into the house of Edmund de la Mare at Peldon, and he was at the house of Richard Stacy and there he removed the books of the lord king. They also present that John Colchestre junior of Maldon, weaver, on Monday before Ascension [recte: Corpus Christi] in the above-said year [10th June 1381] broke into the house at Cressing Temple and took and carried away gods and chattels to the value of 100s., and on the same day he broke into the house of John Sewale at Coggeshall and feloniously took and carried away gods and chattels to the value of 100s., and that he is a common thief etc. They also present that Peter Tressher of Southminster, John Rolf of the same, smith (acquitted as is shown in the calendar), Thomas Somery of the same (acquitted as is shown in the calendar), John Cloddere of the same, tailor, John Bungelere of the same, weaver, John But of the same, wright (acquitted as is shown in the calendar), Richard Bocher (acquitted as is shown in the calendar) and Robert Mundekyn on Wednesday before the feast of St Peter Advincula [recte: St Peter?] in the above-said [26th June 1381] wanted to kill John Salprest, chief constable of the hundred of Dengie, and John Mundekyn, constable of Southminster, and the feloniously rose up against the lord king on Friday before the said feast of St Peter [28th June 1381] etc. They also present that John Lokyer of Heybridge on Tuesday after the feast of Holy Trinity in the above-said year [11th June 1381] broke into the house of John Gildesburgh at High Easter and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels to the value of 100s., and he said that he wanted to kill Robert Rikdon, and that he was a chief leader of the bad company etc. They also present that William Sadeler of Heybridge on Monday after the feast of Holy Trinity in the above-said year [10th June 1381] broke into the house at Cressing Temple and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels to the value of 20s., and on the same day he broke into the house of John Sewale of Coggeshall and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels to the value of 100s. etc, and he feloniously broke into the house of Edmund de la Mare in Peldon and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels to the value of 40s. They also present that John Shakelok of Salcott on Monday after the feast of Holy Trinity in the above-said year [10th June 1381] broke into the house at Cressing Temple and on the same day he broke into the house of John Sewale of Coggeshall and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels to the value of 100s., and he broke into the house of Edmund de la Mare in Peldon and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels to the value of 20s. They also present that John Pecche of Tillingham (acquitted as is shown in the calendar) on Monday after the feast of Holy Trinity in the above-said year [10th June 1381] with his evil society broke into the houses at Cressing Temple and on the same day he broke into the house of John Sewale at Coggeshall and took and carried away goods and chattels to the value of 100s., and he feloniously despoiled the rolls pertaining to the manor of Tillingham Hall etc. They also present that John Dunnyng senior of Bradwell on Sea [Bradewell Bardolf] (acquitted as is shown in the calendar) on Wednesday after the feast of Holy Trinity in the above-said year [12th June 1381] together with other malefactors broke into the house of Edmund de la Mare at Peldon and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels to the value of 10s., and committed other enormities. They also present that John Pollard of Goldhanger on Monday after the feast of Holy Trinity in the above-said year [10th June 1381] broke into the house at Cressing Temple and on the same day he broke into the house of John Sewale of Coggeshall and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels to the value of 100s., and on the following Wednesday [12th June 1381] he broke into the house of Edmund de la Mare in Peldon and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels to the value of 100s. They also present that John Vanne of Totham on Monday after the feast of Holy Trinity in the above-said year [10th June 1381] broke into the house at Cressing Temple and on the same day he broke into the house of John Sewale of Coggeshall and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels to the value of 100 s., and on the following Wednesday [12th June 1381] he broke into the house of Edmund de la Mare in Peldon and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels to the value of 100s. They also present that William Goselyng and John le Eyre of Ramsey Island (acquitted as is shown in the calendar) on Monday after the feast of Holy Trinity in the above-said year [10th June 1381] broke into the house at Cressing Temple and on the same day he broke into the house of John Sewale of Coggeshall and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels to the value of 100s., and they tore up and despoiled the rolls of the prior of Stanesgate . They also present that John Smyth of Latchingdon (acquitted as is shown in the calendar) on Tuesday after the feast of the Holy Trinity in the fourth year [11th June 1381] received three stolen cows, and that he tore up and despoiled all rolls of the manor of Lawling [in Latchingdon] with his evil society. They also present that Robert, servant of John Smyth of Latchingdon and John atte Stane, son of Katrine atte Stane of Latchingdon on Tuesday after the feast of the Holy Trinity in the above-said year [11th June 1381] took in the marsh called Bermerssh in the hundred of Rochford three cows worth 24s. of John Bampton and feloniously drove them off, and they feloniously tore up all rolls of the manor of Lawling. They also present that John Veldman of Bradwell on Sea (acquitted as is shown in the calendar) on Monday after the feast of Holy Trinity in the above-said year [10th June 1381] broke into the house at Cressing Temple and on the same day he broke into the house of John Sewale of Coggeshall and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels to the value of 100s., and that the same John Veldman disseized Florence Kelyng of Dengie of one messuage and 7 acres of land held by villein tenure [terre native] on Tuesday after Ascension [recte: Trinity? 11th June 1381] etc. They also present that John Michel on the Hel in Steeple (acquitted as is shown in the calendar) on Wednesday after the feast of Holy Trinity in the above-said year [12th June 1381] entered the house of William Hened at Tillingham and imposed a fine of 20s. on him and if he did not want to pay the fine the same John would despoil the house of William, and [he was] a chief leader of the evil society etc. |
