Text (English translation) | Hinckford [hundred] - At a session held at Braintree on Tuesday before St Margaret the Virgin in the fifth year of king Richard the Second [16th July 1381] in the presence of the same justices. The inquisition of the hundred of Hinckford held on the aforesaid day and year by the oath of John Trumpe, William Bret, Gilbert Streyk, Roger Smyth, Thomas Bret, William Coleman, John Baldeweld, Richard Bolmar, William Tollere, Gilbert Cole, William Pake and Richard Messyng who say upon their oaths that a certain Peter Coleman lately the servant of Stephen Wyndesore was a common and chief leader of the evil company in this rumour and feloniously came with the said company on the feast of St Barnabas in the fourth year [11th June 1381] to the house of Geoffrey Spryngold at Finchingfield and threatened him in life and limb. And that he threatened Robert Webbe of Finchingfield at Finchingfield in the same way until he made a fine with him of 16 s. 8 d. which he feloniously took and carried away. On the same day at Finchingfield he threatened John Marchal, vicar of the church of Finchingfield, until he made a fine with him for 6s. 8d. and 2 quarters of wheat worth 10s. etc. Also, the same jurors present that William Disse of Tilbury Juxta Clare, John Caunt junior of Thurlow in the county of Suffolk, Robert Cardemaker of Bocking, John Hauberk lately servant of William Bacoun, Edmund Taillor of Halstead, William Dich of Shalford, chaplain, and John Wraw, chaplain, were common and chief leaders of the evil company and feloniously made proclamations by which the people of the locality arose and came on the Wednesday after Trinity in the fourth year [12th June 1381] to the house of Henry English at Birdbrook and feloniously broke into his houses there and feloniously took and carried away gold and silver and other goods and chattels of the said Henry found there worth £ 20 etc. Also, the same jurors present that John Kentissh of Borley, Thomas Robat of Belchamp St Paul, Elias Vynor of Ashen, Edmund Taillour of Halstead were common malefactors in this rumour and chief leaders of the evil company and through their proclamations and their threats of death and mutilation feloniously made the people of the locality to rise up, and that Thomas Robat and Elias on Thursday after Trinity in the fourth year [13th June 1381] came around the house of the rector of Ashen in the village of Ashen and assaulted, beat, wounded and roughly treated Richard Gylot there until he made a fine with them of 40s. and 20s. fine with the commons, and from this they feloniously took 6[0]s. etc. Also, the same jurors present that Robert Knyght of Saffron Walden, chaplain, came with the evil company to the manor of the countess of Norfolk called Ridgewell Hall in the village of Ridgewell and there treasonably burnt every roll and all the muniments pertaining to the said manor etc. Inquisition of the aforesaid hundred [of Hinckford] held at the same place [Braintree] on the aforesaid day and year [16th July 1381] by the oaths of William West, Thomas Taillour, John Palmere, John Thunderlee, Thomas Crawe, Nicholas Aunger, Walter Horsted, Roger Prat, Ralph Clercus, Roger Gyle, William Hunte, and John Nichol who say upon their oath that Robert Cardemakere of Bocking, Robert Rypoun of Bocking John Ripoun of the same, John Huntyngdon of the same, William Huerde of Stisted, 'bokelirpleyere', John Auncell of Braintree, tailor, Jacob Alsy of Dedham, Simon Thecchere of Littlehey [Littley Park in Great Waltham], lately miller of the Prior of Leez, Thomas son of John Aspeloun of Bocking, Robert Warner of Gestingthorpe (acquitted as is shown in the calendar), Robert Roughphale of Bocking, Michael Taillor of the same, Robert Normandy of the same, Robert Kirsyngg of Bocking, John Berewyk of the same, Thomas Sadeler of Braintree, Jacob Prille of Bocking (drawn and hanged as is shown in the calendar), and Geoffrey Bromlie of the same on the Sunday of Pentecost in the fourth year of king Richard the Second [2nd June 1381] at Bocking treasonably arose against the lord king with evil conventicles and congregations assembled by them, and there they swore to be of one agreement to destroy divers lieges of the lord king and his common laws and also all lordship pertaining to divers lords. And afterwards on the Thursday following [6th June 1381] they arose simultaneously and went around to the house of the lord king's sheriff of Essex at Coggeshall and there assaulted the same sheriff and Robert de Segynton, a clerk of the exchequer of the lord king, so that their lives were despaired of. And afterwards on the Monday on the morrow of Trinity [10th June 1381] they treasonably arose with other evil conventicles and pulled down the manor of Cressing Temple and feloniously took and carried away goods and chattels found there to the value of 100 s., and on the same day they went to Coggeshall and pulled down the houses of the said sheriff and feloniously took and carried away his goods and chattels found there. And on the same day they feloniously killed there John Ewell, escheator of the lord king. And afterwards they sent their letters to divers villages to raise the whole country to carry out their evil deeds against the laws and lieges of the lord king to the prejudice of the crown of the lord king and disinheritance of the king and other lords of his kingdom of England. Also, the same jurors present that John Stace of Borley and John Kentyssh, lately sub-bailiff in the aforesaid hundred, feloniously on Saturday after the feast of Corpus Christi in the fourth year of the present king [15th June 1381] in the time of this rumour at Pentlow robbed William Gerveys of vessels, utensils, bronze pots, clothes and other goods and chattels worth 20s. They also present that William Bigge of Felsted, cowherd, and Thomas Cok, servant of the rector of Bulmer, arose on the said day and year [15th June 1381] and were malefactors in the aforesaid things with the evil conventicles etc. They also present that William Smyth of Coggeshall, fuller, John Turnour of Stisted, 'bokelerpleyer', John de Assh (acquited as is shown in the calendar), Thomas Mason of Bocking (acquitted as is shown in the calendar), Thomas Saman of the same (acquitted as is shown in the calendar), Ralph Cook of the same (acquired as is shown in the calendar) Henry Schort of Braintree (drawn and hanged as is shown in the calendar), Gregory Skynnere of the same, John Wynterflod of Coggeshall, tailor, Henry Webbe of Little Coggeshall (acquitted as is shown in the calendar), John Taillour of Coggeshall, tenant of William atte Hal, John Crute of the same, cobbler, Thomas Turnour, Robert Chapman of Dunmow, John Symond, butcher, and John Cartere lately servant of the rector of Stisted, on the Sunday of Pentecost in the fourth year of the reign of king Richard the Second [2nd June 1381] at Bocking treasonably arose with force and arms against the lord king with evil conventicles and congregations assembled by them, and there they swore to be of one agreement in killing and destroying divers lieges of the lord king, saying and swearing that they did not wish to have any law in England apart from certain laws they themselves put forward to be ordained. And afterwards on the Thursday following [6th June 1381] they treasonably arose simultaneously and went around to the house of the sheriff of Essex at Coggeshall and there assaulted the same sheriff and Robert de Segynton, a clerk of the exchequer of the lord king, so that their lives were despaired of.
