Text (English translation) | Lexden - At a session held at Colchester on Wednesday after the Apostles Peter and Paul in the fifth year of king Richard the Second (3rd July 1381) in the presence of the same justices. Inquisition of the hundred of Lexden held there on the aforesaid day and year (3rd July 1381) by the oath of Adam Cook, William Dedham, John Kirkeby, Robert Meryld, John atte Hel, Walter Symond, Thomas Hansepe, Richard Joyere, Oliver atte Hoo, John Lutton, Robert Hulde, Richard Cook of Colne, John Alaun, John Colhorpe, Richard Abraham, William Mate, Humphrey de Perstede, Richard Cook of Horkesley, Thomas Smyth, John Turnor, John Oygen and Peter Folke who say upon their oath that on Monday after Trinity last (10th June 1381), John Turnour, herd, Daniel Mous of Stisted and Robert Cardemakere of Bocking were the principal leaders to collect men for the slaying of John Ewell the escheator of the lord king and pulling down of the manor of Cressing Temple, the manor of lord John Gildesburgh, the manor of Richard Lyons and the house of John Sewale, feloniously taking away goods to the value of one hundred shillings. Also, the same jurors present that Robert Chapman of Dunmow was an associate of the said John, Daniel and Robert doing whatever they did and feloniously burning rolls and muniments on the said day and year. Also, the same jurors present that Walter Buk of Wakes Colne was the messenger in the name of John Carter asking John Sewale the sheriff: 'Am I outlawed in your rolls', and he said: 'If the sheriff does not withdraw my outlawry or of the said John Carter I will have your head', and hereupon he returned with about 500 to kill the said sheriff on the aforesaid day and year. Also, the same jurors present that Richard Baudewene of Marks Tey [Teye ad Ulmos] on Saturday after Corpus Christi (15th June 1381) said to John Aleyn that he would come with the common people to pull down John's houses and also to slay him unless he satisfied him. Also, the same jurors present that John Waryn junior and William Piers of Great Tey gathered the society and came with them to the manor of lord Fitz Wauter on Tuesday after Corpus Christi (18th June 1381) to burn the court rolls and muniments kept there and they burnt them. Also, the same jurors present that Thomas Terry of Dedham was a principal congregator of the people to do evil things, and he said that by the time they had completed these works, inquisitors and prosecutors [accusatores] would have been fully punished. Also, the same jurors present that John Wynterflod and Thomas Sweyn (acquitted as shown in the calendar) of Coggeshall gathered the society to rob various men and also to rise up, and to pull down houses in various places, namely the one of Richard Lyons feloniously on the aforesaid day and year, and they had goods worth 100 s. there. Also, the same jurors present that William Trot, Thomas Hunte, Roger de Pulteria, John Passemer senior of Great Colne were coerced with others of the locality and they and John atte Haldris of Halstead came with another society to the manors of Richard Lyons and Henry Englissh and elsewhere and they took and drove off to Colne 6 oxen, 2 horses and 2 cart horses and they placed 8 foals in the park at Colne and other goods and chattels in a certain house in the village of Colne sealed under the seal of the constable of Colne to protect the property of the lord king and those to whom they belong. Also, the same jurors present that Thomas Marchaunt of Boxted came with others to the manor of lord Robert de Swylyngton at Boxsted and they burnt rolls and muniments. Also, the same jurors present that John Smith of Great Leighs, clerk, John Schipperhurde William Schipperhirde, Robert Beggere on Monday after Trinity in the said year (10th June 1381) came to the close of John Sewale at Coggeshall and feloniously entered and broke into the house and chamber of the said John Sewale and feloniously stole and carried from the said chamber £200 of gold and silver against the peace and law of the lord king etc. |
