Item dicunt quod Iohannes Sconder de Catefelde simul cum aliis ignotis die mercurii proxima post festum Corporis Christi anno regni Regis Ricardi secundi quarto apud Magnam Iernemuth tres homines de Flandres quorum nomine ignorantur per preceptum Galfridi Lister et sociorum suorum felonice interfecerunt et decollaverunt. |
Text (English translation) | Happing Court session at Horning Norfolk. Drugo Gerner and the other jurors of the hundred of Happing who say upon their oath that John Wattes of Scottow, Richard Filmond of Buxton, John Gentilum of Buxton on Monday 17th June 1381 at Scottow, Worstead, Walsham and elsewhere in the county of Norfolk with many others unknown made a common uprising and rumour against the lord king and his peace and they made proclamations and congregations from village to village in the hundreds of North Erpingham, South Erpingham, Blofield, Taverham and Walsham, East Flegg and West Flegg, in the cities of Norwich and Great Yarmouth and elsewhere in the county of Norfolk. Also they say that John, son of Alicia atte Chaumbre of Potter Heigham, his brother Roger, John Skondere of Catfield, Thomas Cabyte and Geoffrey Bisshop of the same, Heny Reyse, John Thurkeld of Dilham junior, Adam Martin of the same, beheaded, John de Birkele of Potter Heigham, Richard Smyth of Ludham, Thomas Belgemyn of the same, John Levesson of Sutton, Adam de Dikkes of Potter Heigham, Simon Cuttekope of Happisburgh and John Geggebald of Ludham and John Wattes ot Scottow together with other unknown evildoers assembled together several people from diverse hundreds and went to the Abbey of St Benedict at Holm and laid siege to it and threatened the life and limb of the Abbot and his monks, and that they would burn their manors, unless they hand over all custumals, rental, court rolls and muniments pertaining to the said Abbey, upon which the aforesaid Abbot and fellow monks handed over the aforesaid custumals, rentals, rolls and muniments to the aforesaid John Wattes and his other associate evildoers at Horning out of fear for their life and limbs and the burning of their manors. And upon this the same John Wattes with his aforesaid associates burned on Thursday 20th June 1381 at Horning all aforesaid custumals, rentals, court rolls and muniments to the grave damage etc. Also they say that the aforesaid John, son of Alicia de Chaumbre with his other aforenamed associate evildoers on Friday 21st June 1381 came to Sutton in the hundred of Happing and there they carried away and burned the rolls and other muniments pertaining to the said manor, and thus they went to the manor of Hickling and from manor to manor within the aforesaid hundred and burned all custumals, rentals, court rolls and muniments belonging to all manors in the aforesaid hundred etc. Also they say that Adam Martyn of Dilham, beheaded, Henry Reyse of the same, William Taillour of Worstead Briggate on Monday 17th June 1381 at Norwich feloniously killed and beheaded Robert de Salle, knight, and Reginald de Eccles, one of the lord king's justices of the peace in the aforesaid county. Also they say that John Sconder of Catfield together with others unknown on Wednesday 19th June 1381 at Great Yarmouth feloniously killed and beheaded three people from Flanders whose names are unknown. |
