Text (English translation)Clackclose Inquisition held before the king's justices at Wiggenhall in the fifth year of King Richard's reign by John de Fyncham and associates. They say that Robert Tewe, Thomas de Breccham, John de Estcroft and Richard Lodere of Littleport came with others unknown on 17th June 1381 to Southery and assaulted Robert de Gravele and placed the head of the same Robert on a certain block to behead him so that to save his life the same Robert made a fine with them for the sum of 8 marks and 16 d. in coin, and 28 cows worth 10 marks, and they were common wrongdoers and disturbers of the peace at the aforesaid time. Also they say that the aforesaid Robert Tewe, Thomas de Breccham, John de Estcroft and Richard Loder of Littleport on the aforesaid day and year came to the aforesaid Southery and there burnt court rolls and various records pertaining to the manor of the aforesaid village. Also they say that John Tram of Southery, Ralph Bryce, John Pepyr of Littleport, John Walmer and John Pope of Hilgay with others unknown of Mildenhall on the aforesaid day and year broke into a certain chamber belonging to John de Methilwold within the Abbey of West Dereham, and took and carried away goods and chattels of the same John in gold and silver and other chattels worth £20. Also they say that on the next Tuesday [18th June 1381] Thomas de Breccham, Richard Loder, Thomas Bernard of Littleport and John Holt, servant of the same Nicholas came in possession of the same Nicholas and took him and led him to Littleport along with goods and chattels worth £20. And there they imprisoned and detained him, and said to him that he would be beheaded until he was freed by the Prior and good men of Ely, and further they took and carried away goods and chattels they found there belonging to John Lucas worth £20. Also they say that Roger Anysson [crossed through] and Robert son of John Maggessone, dwelling in Hindringham, came to Beachamwell at the aforesaid time and threatened the same John [Lucas] that he would be decapitated unless he made a fine of 20 s.
