Text (English translation) | Launditch with South Greenhoe Inquisition held at Swaffham on Saturday 20th July 1381 by Edmund Norton etc. The jurors present that John Betus of Wymondham and Hugo de Caston, butcher, chief leaders of various men, rose up of their own free will against the crown on Wednesday 19th June 1381, and threatened the life and limb of John de Walterton, clerk, at Harpley until they took a fine of £20. Also that Thomas Smyte of Longham, chief leader, Hugo de Caston, butcher, and John Godard of Carbrooke on Monday 17th June 1381, against the king's crown, plundered 380 sheep worth 40 marks and a silver belt worth 100 s. from Thomas Clog, clerk, at Kempston. Also that John Cable, 'bokelerman', John Clerke of Whissonsett, Walter de Tyl, Walter Aleyn and John Munnyng of Rougham rose up on Monday 17th June 1381 against the king's crown, and with many others unknown despoiled John Reed of Rougham of a horse and a saddle worth 20 s. and other goods and chattels worth £20 from John Reed at Rougham by force. Also that Simon Holbek of Gressenhall walked from village to village on Wednesday 19th June 1381, proclaiming and inciting the people to rise up against the crown, and furthermore on Monday 1st July when he was urged to swear to keep the peace by Robert Michel and Adam Rodlond, under-constables of Gressenhall, he rejected everything and refused (to do so). Also that Simon de Gosberkyrk of (South) Creake, Thomas Skynner of Hempton and John Steyn of Pattesley on the aforesaid Monday plundered sixteen pigs worth 22 s. from John Reed of Rougham, and rose up of their own free will. Also that John Betus of Wymondham was a common despoiler and leader in the week after Corpus Christi (i.e. 14th - 21st June 1381) at the houses of John de Herlyng, Thomas Cloge, John Pagrave, John Reed, Edmund Gurnay and others. Also that John atte Hyl of East Dereham, John Wellhousjunior of Beeston , William Bulwer of Sporle and John Boucham on Monday 17th June 1381 rose up against the peace of their own free will, and plundered various goods and chattels, namely lead worth 60 s. and wool worth £20, from John Reed, Thomas Clog, clerk, and Edmund Gurnay, at Rougham, West Lexham and Kempston. Also that Walter Aleyn of Rougham rose up against the peace on Sunday 30th June 1381 and refused to swear to keep the peace at the request of John Bray, under-constable of Rougham, and then went to Massingham inciting an uprising against the crown etc. |
