Text (English translation) | Hundred of Chelmsford Inquisition taken at Chelmsford on Wednesday after the feast of the Apostles Peter and Paul in the 5th Year of King Richard II [3 July 1381] in the presence of Robert Tresilian and William Morrers justices of the lord King etc. by oath of Henry Bodill Robert Bode Thomas Whelere John Haukoun John Nyghteld John Whelere John Adam John Trostele John Baron junior William Beauchamp John Waleys and John Rosselyn who say on their oath that John Geffrey bailiff of East Hanningfield made all the men of the villages of East Hanningfield West Hanningfield and South Hanningfield to go against their will to the temple of the Prior of St John of Jerusalem in England at Cressing and he was the leader of them and arose and went with the iniquitous company voluntarily to the prejudice of the said king and his crown treasonably and the grave damage of his lieges namely on Monday the morrow of Holy Trinity in the 4th year of Richard II [10 June 1381]. And afterwards on Wednesday after the Nativity of John the Baptist following [26 June 1381] he sent John Devenys his servant to the houses of John Baron junior William Harpedon Roger Bode Richard Chervill and others and said to them that unless they went to the church of Great Baddow at sunrise to go with the iniquitous company about the Earl of Buckingham and other lieges of the King, they would be killed and their houses burnt. And that the same John Geffrey on Monday after the feast of Corpus Christi [17 June 1381] together with the iniquitous company made the aforesaid men to go to the park of the Bishop of London at Crondon and broke the park and threw down and discarded the king's banner existing in the said park and took the enclosures of the bishop against the king and the bishop and the peace of the king. And also the same John Geffrey on Thursday after the Nativity of John the Baptist in the said year [27 June 1381] congregated all the men of the villages of East Hanningfield and South Hanningfield and Woodham Ferrers and Rettingdon at Rettingdon Wood and made them swear to rise against the Lord King whensoever they should be warned to the prejudice of the said lord king and against his peace. Inquisition taken at Chelmsford Tuesday after the feast of the Apostles Peter and Paul in the 5th year of Richard II [2 July 1381] in the presence of Robert Tresilian and his fellows justices et co. by the oath of James Stokwell John Gobion John Onywent John Beauchomp Laurence Staner John Hobkyn Nicholas Michel Roger Colvylle William Cut Benedict Stubbere Martin Staner and John Aldewynne who say on their oath that Thomas Bakere of Fobbing, Thomas Geldebourne of Fobbing, Thomas Reve of Fobbing, John Barbour of Stanford-le-Hope, John Hoberd of Mucking, a certain weaver of Horndon-on-the-Hill called Shortwebbe, Thomas Parker lately servant of Thomas Morewelle at 'Wolvelespark', a certain weaver staying at Billericay, Thomas Kyng of Mucking, John Stabler of Mucking, John Neuman of Rawreth, a common robber, John Stubber of Ramsden, Benedict Onere of Warley, Richard Jan of Warle, Stephen Onywand, Nicholas Sarkyn, John Lyghtfot tyler, John Stalworth barber, Richard atte Ree of Harwardstock, John Hayward servant of Geoffrey Colvill, William Smythe of Ginge, Robert Cardemaker of Bocking, William Sculle of Goldhanger, Richard Onere of Warley, John Whelere of the same, William Gylmyn of Rainham, John Scunery of Weald, John Flemyng weaver of Benington, William Coteler of Warley, John Gynes, Richard Lent of Ingatestone first arose against the lord King and gathered to them many malefactors and enemies of the King and made congregations at Brentwood on Thursday after the feast of the Ascension of Lord in the 4th year of Richard II [30 May 1381] and assaulted with bows and arrows John Gildesburgh, John Bampton and other justices of the Lord King to keep the peace in the county of Essex sitting there on that day, seeking to kill them. And afterwards on Monday the morrow of Trinity then next following [10 June 1381] they went to the house of the Prior of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem at Cressing and broke and destroyed the houses of the said Prior and feloniously took and carried away the goods of the Prior. And afterwards on that day they broke the houses of John Sewale sheriff of Essex and feloniously took and carried away 1,400 marks of money of the said John Sewale. And afterwards they rode armed in a land of peace and did many misdeeds. |
