Text (English translation)Writ: King Richard II to John Bradeford, escheator in Essex, that Richard Baud, who, for diverse felonies and seditions, was convicted and hanged in Chelmsford at Saturday before the feast of translation of St Thomas the Martyr (6 July 1381), did not hold in his demesne and his fee on the day he committed his said seditions a messuage with a garden and courtyard with its appurtenance in the hamlet of Moulsham within the town of Chelmsford of the Abbot of Westminster for services of 8 s. a year and which value per year above the service owed to the chief lords of the fee is 20 s. But that William, vicar of the church of Maldon, Thomas Hasell, Sewall Brounefeld, William Chepyngham, John Geboun, John Clobbe et Robert Gobeoun were in possession in demesne and fee of the said messuage with a garden and courtyard with its appurtenance as a single tenement in the hamlet of Moulsham within the town of Chelmsford for a long time before the day the aforementioned felonies and seditions were perpetrated, namely from Wednesday at the feast of St Thomas the Martyr anno 1 Ric II (29 December 1377; should be Tuesday not Wednesday) until Monday after the feast of Exaltatio St Crucis 5 Ric II (15 Sept. 1381), the day when Richard de Goldyngton, formerly escheator in Essex took the messuage with garden and courtyard by reason of the aforementioned into our hands. We order you to hand it back to the said William, Thomas, Sewall, William, John, John and Robert together with the profits from the time it was taken into our hands until it was released ... Dated, Westminster 20 Oct. 7 Ric II [1383].
