Text (English translation) | Bedfordshire. Thomas Tryvet attached to answer William Bateman on a plea that together with William Vyker of Linton and John Staunford saddeler he broke the closes and houses of William Bateman at Dunton and Cockayne Hatley and took and carried away goods and chattels worth £40 and other injuries to the great damage of the said William and against the peace of the King. And the said William Bateman appears in person and complains that the said Thomas together et co. on 16 June 1381 with force and arms, namely with swords, bows and arrows, broke the closes and houses of the said William Bateman at Dunton and Cockayne Hatley and took and carried away goods and chattels namely wheat, barley, beans, peas and oats both in the fields and in the granaries, lead pots, metal and wooden dishes, various household utensils, tablecloths, napkins and other linen and woollens, and timber boards to the value et co. and other injuries et co. And he suffered damages of £100. And the said Thomas appears in person and says that he is not guilty of the said trespass and places himself on the country. And the said William Bateman likewise. Therefore the sheriff is ordered to summon twelve jurors for the quindene of Easter 1384. And upon this Richard Maysterman John Trippelowe Simon Bentelowe and John Haddeham mainprise the said Thomas to appear at the said term and from day to day until judgement is rendered and William is recompensed for any damages according to the custom of the court, body for body in accordance with the statute published in the last parliament at Westminster. |
