Text (English translation) | Hundred of Maidstone Inquisition held at Maidstone on the 4th July 1381 before Thomas Holand earl of Kent by oath of Alan Deghere, Simon Halle, John Gravesend, William Hieibe, John Payard, John Rook, Thomas Bounde, Richard Barbur, John Palmere, John Rowe, Thomas Game and Gilbert Horn, who say that Hugo Moneye of Thurnham on 7th June 1381 went to the house of William Topclyve in Maidstone at la Mote and burgled the house and took goods and chattels worth £10. They say that the same Hugo is a common thief. Robert Glovere of Strood and one Dierlyng de Chalk, barber, similarly burgled the buildings of the said William on the same day, and took and carried away a hauberk, a target, a lance, a bow and two sheaves of arrows. John Modele of Rochester, chandler, went to the house of the said William on the same day and then carried away and broke certain goods and chattels belonging to him and broke wine-barrels of the said William. John Breme of the county of Bedfordshire and staying in Maidstone from day to day burgled the buildings of William and Nicholas Heryng at Foots Cray on 8th June and took and carried away certain goods and chattels. Andrew Poyntel of Maidstone and William Taborer of Maidstone on the same day burgled the buildings of the aforesaid William and Nicholas in the place aforesaid and took and carried away certain goods and chattels. Thomas Newman, shoemaker, and John lately servant of John Tomes of Maidstone, shoemaker on the aforesaid day burgled the buildings of the aforesaid William and Nicholas in the place aforesaid and took and carried away certain goods and chattels. Thomas Aldreman of Maidstone associate of Andrew Poyntel on 10th June 1381 went to the house of John Godwot at Borden and took geese, capons and hens, and also burgled the house of John Tebbe at Canterbury. Robert Cosyn, weaver, staying with Giles Auncel of Maidstone on the aforesaid day burgled the buildings of the aforesaid William Topclyve and Nicholas Heryng in the aforementioned place. John Merymouth of Stockbury, skinner, was a common disturber of the king's peace and was one of the supporters of the wrongdoers, and threatened Thomas Holte under-sheriff of Kent, until he swore an oath to the king and that company. John Barbur of Newington on 10th June entered the house of Thomas Holte at Canterbury and burgled and dispoiled various goods and chattels and struck Thomas with a staff. Sampson Halsted of Maidstone, spicer, on the aforesaid day went to the house of Nicholas Heryng and furtively took a 'Jakke' doublet lined with fur and carried away other goods and chattels. John Sampson senior (confessed) and Nicholas Baret of Maidstone were at the house of Nicholas Heryng on the day aforesaid and burgled it and tore it down. William Shepere of Maidstone [dated after Trinity but full date illegible] took a grey horse lately belonging to Simon Archbishop of Canterbury [and rode it straight to Maidstone]. Henry Maas of Foots Cray and Walter Bochier of Maidstone were supporters of the wrongdoers and rose at the houses of William Topclyve and Nicholas Heryng and elsewhere and burgled and tore down their buildings against the king's peace. John Newhows of Thurnham on 10th June 1381 burgled the house of Henry Somenour of Boughton under Blean and tore it down. Robert Bakere of Dartford on 7th and 8th June 1381 was one of the supporters of the wrongdoers and disturbers of the king's peace and gathered together men of Maidstone to burgle the buildings of Wiliam Topclyve and Nicholas Heryng in the aforesaid locations. Richard Ropere of Bearsted was one of those who killed John Tebbe at Canterbury. John Telye of Bexley entered the manor of Thomas Foge, knight, at Tonford and took from him a bay horse, a white ermine fur for an outer garment, one ell of scarlet cloth and cameline [luxury fabric] belonging to Thomas's wife, and carried these goods away. Julia wife of Richard Pouchere of Maidstone went on 11th June 1381 to meet with men of Canterbury and of the county of Essex who had arisen [...] Alan Deghere keeper of Maidstone gaol and John Graye his servant so that they led them from the said Alan and John by which the said sustainers and wrongdoers threw down and destroyed the said gaol, similarly threatening to throw down and destroy the house of Alan himself. And so [....] to punish by death until Alan made a fine with the said maintainer and disturber of the peace viz. John Hales of Malling [...] wrongdoer and disturber of the peace of the said lord King. And that the said Julia consented and assisted in freeing and delivering from their chains Simon [...]worth and John Cerscine prisoners in Maidstone gaol so that they escaped from the gaol. John Ramsey de Bexley was a maintainer and disturber [of the peace] and he burgled [...] in Maidstone and Canterbury. John [...] abetted by the men of Dartford burgled and tore down the buildings of William Topclyve at the Tower in Sheppey and Linton and his evil company went to the house of John Maister senior of Loddington [...] to tear down the buildings of the said John because he had from the said John sixteen acres of land which for 30 [...] William Senyng gave to the said John on account of the marriage of the said Robert with his daughter.
