Text (English translation) | Hundred of Littlefield Inquisition held at Maidstone on the 5th July 1381 before Thomas Holand earl of Kent and his associates, assigned justices of the king into various risings and assemblies made and perpetrated against the king and his people, by oath of Roger Oxebroke, Roger Bouryng, Richard Bakere, John Fromond, John Underwode, Nicholas Renkyn, Thomas Kent, John Totesham, Nicholas Monde, John Aldulff, Simon Bournemell and Walter Hamond, who say on their oath that William Holdenne of Shipbourne senior, William Hendyman of Shipbourne, William Wardon of Lamberhurst, John Smith of Wrotham and Bartholomew Kyriell of Wateringbury on 15th June 1381 were involved in various uprisings and assemblies at Tonbridge and with other wrongdoers unknown entered feloniously into the castle of Tonbridge seeking Nicholas Heryng and John Bampton in order to kill them, and the same night feloniously entered and broke into the park called Posterne against the king's peace. Richard Roger of Peckham on 15th June with others unknown entered the park called Posterne and broke through the door of the house of the Earl of Stafford called Logge against the king's peace. Nicholas Bur of Brenchley, John Herry, John Bur brother of Nicholas Bur, John Kypping of Tonbridge and John Chyvynton on 15th June 1381 at Tonbridge made various uprisings and assemblies and feloniously broke one pair of stocks, and the same day broke the stocks of the Lord King at Washlingstone, and the same wrongdoers on that day feloniously broke into the house of Nicholas Merefeld at Tonbridge, along with Phillip Brewere and Henry Day of the parish of Tonbridge. William atte Lake of Capel and John Cook of Capel on 14th June 1381 with other unknown wrongdoers in London feloniously set fire to the Hospital of Saint John and certain documents and the manor of Savoy against the king and people. |
