Text (English translation)Hundred of Rochester Inquisition held at Maidstone on 4th July 1381 before Thomas Holand earl of Kent and his associates, assigned justices of the king into various risings and assemblies made and perpetrated against the king and his people, by oath of John Southgate, Thomas Godet, Stephen Bakere, Benedict Kyx, Richard Pelle, John Lamb, John Champeneys, Thomas Basely, John Marchant, Henry Peak, William Broun and John Polleghe, who say on their oath that Elias Reyner of Strood, king's escheator in the county of Kent handed over the records of his escheatorship and of the hundred of Middleton to Richard Poser of Rochester, and afterwards John Bawdry of Snodland came with others unknown who feloniously seized and burnt them at Rochester on 9th June 1381. Stephen Hosteller of Dartford, William Hosteller servant of John Sharp of Dartford, William Thresshere and Thomas Osbarn of Strood together and separately were involved in various uprisings and assemblies at Dartford on 6th June 1381 against the king and his people, and with others unknown pulled down the house of William Topclyve at Maidstone on 7th June. And they feloniously burnt all the documents of the said William on that day against the king's peace. William atte Broke of Chatham junior and Hugo Walshman on 9th June 1381 with other wrongdoers feloniously pulled down the house of John Glovere at Rochester. Thomas servant of John Shereday of Strood, Richard Bakere servant of William Hose, Thomas Mathew, Matthew Delhay, Thomas Robynet of Frindsbury, Nicholas Knight, John Bouere, John Taillour, servant of John Spencer of Rochester, were involved in various uprisings and assemblies at Rochester on 9th June 1381, and feloniously pulled down the house of Nicholas Heryng at Rochester and houses of Thomas Seyntalbon at Frindsbury, against the king and his people. Peter Fraunceys of Rochester on 10th June 1381 at Borden with others unknown feloniously pulled down the house of John Godwot, and burnt certain documents. A gown and a horn set in silver worth half a mark belonging to John were stolen and carried away, against the peace. Richard Bocher of Rochester on 12th June 1381 between Deptford and London made an assault on the bishop of Rochester and restrained his horse against the peace.
