Text (English translation) | Robert Smyth of Stratford Langthorne attached to answer the Abbot of Stratford concerning a plea whereby he together with Thomas Halman, William Bokeler, John Fotyng of West Ham, John Bokeler of Green Street, Jacob Lorchun, William Clerc, poulterer, John Brand, Thomas Skachelok, John Skachelok and Nicholas Phelip of Little Ilford, with force and arms broke the close and houses of the Abbot at West Ham and assaulted the Abbot and beat, wounded and imprisoned the Abbot and detained the Abbot in prison until he handed over to Robert and the others charters writings and other muniments to be burnt and made threats to the Abbot's men and servants so that for fear of death they withdrew from the Abbot's service and the Abbot lost the service of his men and servants for a great time to the great damage of the Abbot and against the peace of the King. And the same Abbot by John Giffard his attorney pleads that the said Robert together with [breaks off]. |
